Campaign Signs in Trees? Give Us a Break

O.k. it is getting close to early voting. The signs are beginning to litter our right of ways and that is normal and unfortunately part of the process. But why does one candidate litter our community with his yard signs attached to the trees. Our trees don't ask to be used in this way. They are part of our ecosystem and should not be used as yard sign posts.

However, if you were like me yesterday traveling Northshore Drive from Concord Road all the way to Lakeshore (the corner of Westland/Lyons View and Northshore) you will see about 10 Ken Irvine campaign yard signs attached to the trees.

Come on Democrats and in particular appointed Criminal Court Judge Ken Irvine. Why would you use the trees? I hope that Irvine's campaign committee will go out and free our trees from the burden of carrying out his campaign message.

For once I agree with you Brian. I took a class in landscaping a few years ago and anytime a foreign object such as a nail is driven into a tree it makes the tree susceptible to disease. This is not a good practice but it could just be a well meaning volunteer.

  2. A volunteer that has endangered at least 10 trees.

    Brian,
Perhaps the property owner (the person that owns the trees) either put them there himself or gave permission to have them put there. Are you questioning PROPERTY RIGHTS? You need to check this out before you start sounding like a liberal and, or an enviromentalist.

  4. The trees are on Knox County park property and in the right of way. No property owner rights to teh trees. It runs for over 9 miles.

I am a Conservative and Enviromentalist. Being kind to trees is not a liberal or democrat trademark.

    Brian,
OK! I get your point now. Yes, if they are on public property it is wrong. You should have said that in your post. That's an important detail.

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK. THOSE SIGNS ARE HUNG FROM THE TREES WITH ZIP TIES AND NOT NAILS! BIG DIFFERENCE.

  7. Thank you Irvine campaign. We never reported they were nailed. we reported they were hung on trees in the right of way.

Using zip ties does not make it right to use our trees for such an action. In fact zip ties will hinder the trees ability to grow and is as deadly to the tree as a nail.

Irvine do the right thing and remove the signs from our trees. Quit using our trees as hostages as your stakes.

God did not intend our trees to be used in this manner. Do the right thing, if it is in you. It probably isn't.

    Brian,
Zip ties can be cut with either wire cutters or some such other implement. Easily. Some zip ties have a little tab you press that allows them to be removable. Unlike nails. Another important detail you either didn't know or left out. Either way you need to kick your cit'zin journalisticalism up a notch. But then I've always thought that and I'm a liberal so ...
