Metro Pulse Gets it Wrong and Fabricates Brian's Blog Post

This from the liberal leftist Mtero Pulse blog. They get it wrong, even to the point of fabricating a post that is aleged to have been posted in 2005.

Hornback Can't Believe He Used to Think Frith Was Cool, Now Thinks He is Such a Total Dickwad

By Charles Maldonadoon July 30, 2009 12:21 PM

First of all the headline is false in that Brian Hornback never believed Frith was "cool" and Brian Hornback doesn't believe he is such a total dickwad. Primarily because I don't use that type of language.

(Note: I don't usually spend my time responding to Brian's blog, but he emailed a link of this entry to Metro Pulse as well as every other media outlet in town, so I hope I don't get any angry phone calls from him this time.)

Yes, the Brian's Blog office did send a link to our post. We are reviewing why Metro Pulse was included. Secondly, Brian Hornback doesn't even know who Charles Maldonadoon is, has NEVER had a conversation with said person so here is another lie by Charles Maldonadoon.

Local blogger and former Knox County GOP Chairman Brian Hornback posted an entry last night about the recent hiring of real estate agent Scott Frith (who was almost voted into Mackay's position by the County Election Commission) for the newly created position of Deputy Administrator of Elections, a position that carries an $83,000 yearly salary.

Brian's Blog will concur with the previous paragraph.
Hornback raises some serious-sounding objections to the hire by Democratic Administrator of Elections Greg Mackay.
Brian's Blog will concur with the previous paragraph.

1.) The job was as Req. #704 and was posted for five days. It was posted July 14 - July 20, 2009 at 4:30 p.m. Because it was posted for only five days. It was not posted on the Knox County web page and was NOT advertised in the Knoxville News-Sentinel.

2.) Because it was not posted for longer than five days, the applicant pool was not screened by Knox County Human Resources. In layman's terms all resumes were simply turned over to Greg Mackay.

3.) Only four individuals applied. They are listed in alphabetical order by last name with a brief description of the material they supplied.

Brian's Blog will concur with the previous three items as they are a partial cut and paste from our original posting.

He concludes with this: "In our opinion it is clear that rules were stretched on this hiring and with this new day in Knox County where everything is to operate in an open and transparent process it is clear this one did not."

Brian's Blog will concur with part of the previous paragraph. We will note that the post concludes with, Brian's Blog is not just Brian Hornback so the word "He" would not be appropriate.

Let me begin by saying I completely agree that it may have been better to do this with a bit more transparency. Several people, including Hornback himself, have put forth the very credible hypothesis that this hire was an attempt to quell local Republican ire at the Election Commission's decision to keep Mackay on as Administrator.

Brian's Blog will concur with a majority of this paragragh. We would stipulate that instead of "a bit more transparency", county business should be conducted with complete transparency.

And if that is the case, then surely it deserves attention. If there are backroom dealings here, all involved should own up. However, has Hornback really demonstrated here that the rules have been "stretched?"

Brian's Blog agrees that it deserves attention. However, it is unlikely that the Metro Pulse, Knoxville News Sentinel or Shopper News will give it any attention. As they are all owned by the same company. Additionally, Frith is a former employee of the Shopper News thus making him one of them. Additionally, being extremely liberal and a supporter of Greg MacKay's party. They do not want to lose their leader.

In the very same blog post, Hornback quotes Election Commissioner Robert Bowman as saying "the statute gives the Administrator broad discretion, I didn't vote for the Administrator. But, unfortunately we are stuck with it."

Brian's Blog concurs that the quote is accurate. Brian's Blog believes that there is a remedy. The Karns, Halls and Powell Republican Clubs have unaniomusly passed resolutions that asked GOP Chairman Ray Jenkins to request that the Knox County Legislative Delegation request Paul Crilly's resignation, replace him. The Knox County Election Commission can replace Mackay at any time.

True. State law gives Mackay full responsibility for the hiring of his staff within the constraints of his budget, which was approved by the Election Commission and County Commission.

Brian's Blog concurs with the previous paragraph. However, it is unclear that the 17 positions as of Wednesday is within the budget approved by County Commission in June 2009. We are confident County Commission will be looking at line item transfers not previously approved by County Commission.

Mackay's office is budgeted for 17 positions. With Frith it still only has 16. Hornback objects to the fact that the salary wasn't approved by County Commission. But, unless Mackay goes beyond his $1.5 million budget, why should he have to do that?

Brian's Blog disagrees with this paragraph. The report that was generated on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 records 17, not 16 positions.

As for the lack of "screening" by HR, that's not their job. This is: Applications for employment shall be accepted by the human resources manager and distributed to the hiring authorities having job openings. (From Knox County Charter)

Metro Pulse didn't read and record further. Frances Forgerson of Knox County HR would disagree that it is NOT her job to screen the applications.

Of course, it's clear that Hornback is really pissed off at (1) Paul Crilly, the only Republican Commissioner who voted to keep Mackay on, and (2) Tim Burchett, who supported Crilly's re-election to the Commission earlier this year as well as the new election of Robert Bowman (instead of Hornback himself, who also applied for the position). Burchett was also a very strong supporter of Mackay.

Brian's Blog disagrees. Brian Hornback is not pissed off at 1) Paul Crilly. Because Brian Hornback told everyone involved including applicants for Administrator that they were wasting their time because Crilly owed Mackay. 2) It is factually inaccurate taht Burchett supported Crilly. Crilly is the nominee of former State Representative Jamie Hagood, now Senator Jamie Hagood Woodson. Crilly was appointed after a failed Republican primary challenge to Hagood. Burchett is NOT a strong supporter of Mackay. His person on the election commission is longtime friend Chris Haegerty, who voted AGAINST Mackay.

So, while he certainly has a point in calling into question the reason for the hire, Hornback, in raising these particular objections without also pointing out that Mackay appears to have been acting fully within his rights, fails to live up to the type of openness he claims he expects.

The previous paragraph is a work of fiction by the author.

The entry gets downright embarrassing when it stoops to juvenile attacks. Hornback spends a large portion of the entry lambasting Frith's experience, intelligence, etc., like here:

Scott Frith, a realtor listed on his application for employment his mother Diane Frith as his only work reference and supervisor. He listed that he was a graduate of Halls High School and the University of Tennessee. He simply listed a Bachelor of Arts. Editorial Note: It is nice to have the recommendation of your mommy.

The previous two paragraphs are comical. First Brian's Blog clearly reported exactly what Frith submitted for employment. It was certainly lacking from what others submitted. As for the Editorial Note it is the pergroative of the editoral staff of Brian's Blog. Just like Jack McElroy when he made fun of the language used by Commission Chairman Tank Strickland.

In contrast, here is Hornback on Scott Frith in 2005, when Frith won Halls Man of the Year. The post is titled "Congratulations to Scott Frith":

I first met Scott in 1998, Scott helped Republican Cathy Quist in her campaign for Circuit Court Clerk. Scott was either a Senior at Halls High School or just out of high school and he mobilized some young people calling themselves "The Conquistadors". At the time, in the primary I managed the successful campaign of Republican County Commissioner Mike Arms and in the general election managed the county-wide campaign of Republican candidate for Chancellor Wayne Houser.

A few years ago Scott was encouraged to pursue the position of Knox County Republican Chairman, he chose not to. Scott, What was that you said to me this past January? "Have you lost your mind?"

Scott is a successful businessman with Realty Executives. He is very committed to his community, Halls and is an all around good guy. If you don't believe me, just ask him. I think I can hear him now, "it's because, I am Scott Frith."

Brian's Blog is perplexed by the four previous paragraphs, a total work of fiction. A search of Scott Frith's name on Brian's Blog does not turn up a post dating back to 2005.

Geez, I wonder what happened there.

Brian's Blog wonders the same thing about the author of this Daily Pulse.

Director of Probation - Knox County

The exchange of Pre-Trial from the Mayor's office to the Knox County Sheriff's Department or the Todd Cook employment exchange program was delayed by County Commission for 30 days. Brian's Blog previous reports 7/20/09 here, also 7/27/09 here and the original post from 12/10/07 here.

However, Brian's Blog has been informed that the position of Director of Probation which will answer to the Knox County Mayor's office was also only posted for five days, similar to the Deputy Director of Administrator of Elections. Read about those shenanigans here.

This was supposed to be a new day in Knox County with open and transparent operation of our government. But, every time we turn around it is shenanigans, shenanigans and more shenanigans.

Of course, Jack McElroy and Crew only report it when it is an official like Scott Moore, Lee Tramel, Lumpy Lambert or anyone that McElroy doesn't like. McElroy only like the types of people like Tony Norman, Mike Hammond that simply say, yes sir Mr. Editor.

The Deputy Director Administrator of Elections Turns Up Lots of Questions

Brian's Blog contacted Knox County Human Resources about the recently created position of Deputy Director Administrator of Elections.

Here are the facts as we discovered today.

Frank Brewer, submitted an application for employment. Brewer holds a BS in Education from University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a MS in Science. Brewer listed three work references. Brewer is currently an Assistant Director for an agency and has held former positions of General Manager and Supervisor with two previous employers.

Arby Dickert, submitted a cover letter, application for employment and a detailed resume. Dickert listed a BS in Chemical Engineering from Clemson University, three work references. Dickert has worked for at least three computer information technology firms and one financial investment company.

John W. Hall, submitted an application of employment and a resume. Hall possesses a Bachelors degree from University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a Masters of Public Administration from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Hall submitted three work references which including Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale. Hall has worked as a campaign intern with Harold Ford, Jr for U.S. Senate campaign. Hall has also been employed with a local law firm. Hall list his current employment as Assistant to Administrator of Elections with the Knox County Election Commission. In checking with the Knox County Human Resources office, they have Hall listed as a part-time election worker.

4.) Election Commission Chairman Chris Haegerty in a brief interview today said that he was unaware of this position and/or hiring until it was announced that Frith was working at the Election Commission. Election Commissioner Robert Bowman also in a brief interview was also unaware of the position prior to the hiring. Bowman said "the statute gives the Administrator broad discretion, I didn't vote for the Administrator. But, unfortunately we are stuck with it." Efforts to reach Election Commissioners Paul Crilly, Cassandra Stuart and Cameron Brooks were unsuccessful prior to our deadline.

5.) We obtained from the Knox County Human Resources Department a list of all current employees of the Election Commission with each employees hire date and their current salary.

Election Commission Chairman Chris Heagerty - 4/19/2003 - $5,000.00

Election Commission Secretary Robert Bowman - 4/6/2009 - $3,900.00

Election Commissioner Paul Crilly - 4/16/2001 - $3,900.00

Election Commissioner Cassandra Stuart - 8/5/2004 - $3,900.00

Election Commissioner Cameron Brooks - 1/13/2009 - $3,900.00

Administrator of Elections Greg Mackay - 11/1/1989 - $110,647.71 Mackay's hire date in our opinion is the date he was hired as an Election Commissioner not as Administrator. Simply because he has not held the position of Administrator since 1989. He has previously held the position of Election Commissioner.

Chief Deputy Administrator - 1/28/1986 - $59,871.44

Deputy Director Administrator of Elections Scott Frith - 7/22/2009 - $83,711.13

Administrative Assistant - 3/9/1988 - $32,071.46

Deputy Clerk - 7/27/1989 - $31,048.34

Deputy Clerk - 9/9/1996 - $33,499.53

Deputy Clerk - 7/17/2008 - $24,511.85

Computer Technician - 7/21/2003 - $38,969.82

Office Administrator - 4/9/2001 - $36,720.01

Technician Part-Time - 9/1/1978 - $20,854.32

Technician Part-Time - 5/3/1988 - $20,031.10

Temporary/PT Employee Part-Time - 10/16/1994 - $11,416.86

As you can see from the hire dates, there are many employees with many years of election experience. One employee has 31 years. One employee has 23 years. Two employees have 21 years. Two employees have 20 years. One employee has 15 years. One employee has 13 years. One employee has 8 years. One employee has 6 years. One employee has 1 year and Scott Frith who possesses NO election experience was hired on 7-22-2009.

It is our desire that the other local media journalists will continue to look into this issue. This is what we found in our effort as part time citizen journalist with a skeleton crew. In our opinion it is clear that rules were stretched on this hiring and with this new day in Knox County where everything is to operate in an open and transparent process it is clear this one did not.

We will continue to educate you on the shenanigans of the Knox County Administrator of Elections.

Politics at Play @ the Knox County Commission

Knox County is 13 months away from the next election and politics is playing a BIG role in the actions of the members of County Commission. In the 2010 election there will only be one Commissioner in each of the nine districts and two at large county wide Commissioners.

Last night, in the vote to censure Commissioner Lambert you could see politics at play. First, in the Seventh district R. Larry Smith voted NO. As Michele Carringer was to vote she delayed and then passed. As all Commissioners voted and there were 11 votes to censure, Carringer voted YES making the vote 12 to censure. In next years election, Carringer can say show that she and Smith are separate on several issues.

In the Ninth district, Mike Brown voted to censure primarily it is believed because Victoria DeFreese was an eyewitness in Lambert's defense. You could see Brown's body language change when his replacement first appeared on the screen.

The Censure of Lumpy is Because Tony is Skeered

The Knox County Commission spent one hour and fifty five minutes in debating the censure of Lumpy. Instead of it really being the censure of lumpy, it was really "Tony is skeered and wants revenge." Commissioner Tony Norman presented his case that he is skeered of Lumpy from South Knoxville and Karns meetings. Norman presented his "evidence" and one witness. Lumpy presented his case and three witnesses via videotape. In the video testimony, references were made to Norman's smirk. Every time that smirk came across Norman's face.

After some debate, a citizen that has appeared at Board of Zoning Appeals concerning a landscape business and has had some previous public disagreements with Commissioner Lambert appeared and testified against Lumpy. Thus bringing Norman's witnesses to two. Then Chairman Strickland recognized the first lady again. So, instead of the five minute rule per citizen, Chairman Strickland allowed one lady to speak ten minutes.

The Knox County Commission rules allow the Chairman to discipline Commissioners without the entire Commission having to deal with it. So, because the Knox County Commission Chairman can not "man-up" and address it, the tax payers had to endure one hour and fifty five minutes because Norman is skeered and can't handle a difference of opinion with Lumpy.

So, the bottom line is this. Tank, you need to man-up. Tony, you need to grow up. Finally, Lumpy, quit the drama class, you already got an A.

By the way, Norman in presenting the evidence said that he would not make a motion because that would be inappropriate. He then seconded Mark Harmon's motion, which makes Norman a liar. Norman also voted on the censure.

Knox County Citizen Dan Andrews Moves County Commission To Real Action

Knox County citizen Dan Andrews sat through Knox County Commission for six hours tonight. He had signed up for public forum before 2:00 p.m. After six hours Commissioner Brad Anders acknowledged that Andrews was the only non media, non taxpayer funded individual in the audience. He asked that Andrews be allowed to speak before any further commission business.

Andrews spoke about public forum and how it is unnecessary to make some one wait six hours to address the commission. Commissioner Briggs and Lambert had an excellent idea and presented it to commission. It will advance to the Rules Committee and is likely to be implemented next month. Here is the idea. If a citizen wants to speak at 2:00 p.m. and sign up for 2:00 p.m. then they will be heard. If a citizen signs up and wants to speak at 3:25 p.m. as soon as an item being dealt with by commission is concluded and as close to 3:25 p.m. that citizen will be heard at that time.

Today is Dan Andrews birthday. Instead of Knox County citizens giving him a birthday present, Andrews has given all of us a BIG present.

Brian's Blog Coverage Contributes to 30 Day Postponement

Because of our coverage last week, here, of Mayoral employee Todd Cook. The Knox County Commission today postponed any action for 30 days on moving Pre-Trial to the Sheriff's department.

In 2003, all the Judges, District Attorney General said it should be moved to the Mayor's office. Now, that Todd Cook needs to get out of the Mayor's office. It is suddenly a good idea to move it back to the Sheriff.

Last week, Todd Cook approached a lunch table where Brian Hornback and a County Commissioner were having lunch and boasted that Sheriff Jones told him not to show up to today's meeting and that there were already 17 votes for the movement. Brian Hornback asked Sheriff Jones if this statement by Cook was accurate and he stated it was not. So, now Todd Cook is a known liar.

Todd Cook on the previous post with the videos attached was found to be a known liar. By the statements of our fine District Attorney General, Randy Nichols. Now with Sheriff Jones comments Todd Cook is found to be a known liar. He gets so emotional when questioned by County Commission that Mayoral employee Dwight Van de Vate has to put his arm around him, usher him from the room and instruct Commission that they can not ask Cook any additional questions.

State Senator Paul Stanley Finds a Friend in Campfield

While Republicans were being quiet or reserved in their criticism of State Senator Paul Stanley's romp in the bed with a 21 year old intern. One legislator, State Representative Stacey Campfield (as reported here) was openly defensive of Stanley's actions, even in some opinions almost boasting of Stanley's actions.

The picture to the left is the Stanley family Christmas picture from 2007. Even today he has his family photograph on his website, check it out here.

Campfield is single. Stanley is married with two young children. Even though he may be in the midst of marriage problems and a possible divorce. Is this the way that Stanley believes that he is to demonstrate responsibility to his young children? Time will tell if the citizens of the State Senate district that Campfield wants to represent as State Senator will agree with Campfield's defense of Stanley.

Knoxville's Next Mayor

I keep seeing the list of likely candidates for Knoxville Mayor and they keep listing every likely name except the most likely next Mayor of Knoxville. County Commissioner Ivan Harmon came closest to beating former Mayor Victor Ashe. He has served two terms as City Council member. He is finishing his second term as a County Commissioner, both times winning with huge margins.

So, while the list of likely candidates list other likely candidates, they are leaving out the name of the next Mayor of Knoxville.

This Is Wrong...I Don't Care If The News Sentinel Is Involved

As all of you know Brian's Blog is not a fan of the News Sentinel. However, there are some good people employed at the News Sentinel. It's just not ones named McElroy and/or Hartmann. But, this story of the County Mayor's aide tattle telling on a blogger is just wrong. So, on this issue I stand with Scott McNutt and his blog Snark Bites. Go check out Snark Bites here. And while you are at it, send an email to Mayor Ragsdale and tell him that this action by his staff was wrong. I am sure that he will be happy to hear from you.

Prince Phillip of Nashville and TN Democrats Out Source TN Jobs.

From the Tennessean. Nashville lawmakers criticized the Department of Human Services Monday for renewing a contract with a Wall Street bank that routes calls to a center in India. The policy sends away jobs that could have been filled by workers in Tennessee.

You won't read about this in Knoxville's daily newspaper because that would be going against Jack McElroy's political party. You will not see it on WBIR because that would be going against Bill Shory's political party. They NEVER run an objective story about Prince Phillip of Nashville.

The Deputy Administrator of Elections Job pays $83,000.00 plus

Our Knox County tax dollars are being wasted by the Knox County Election Administrator Greg Mackay. He has created the position that he gave to the runner-up for Administrator and is paying him $83,000.00. Mackay NEVER had a Deputy before. Where is this $83,000.00 coming from? Did they eliminate 4 office positions to fund this one job? If this money was not approved by County Commission. It needs to be. All five of the Election Administrators should be replaced for allowing Mackay to do this.

Here is the job posting as provided by Ray H. Jenkins, Knox County Republican Party Chairman through a comment of the first Brian's Blog post on this subject. It is interesting to note that the Deputy Administrator required a BS degree. But the Administrator only required a GED.

Also, for the record it seemed in yesterday's announcement that they mentioned every job and award Frith has ever performed or received. They left out that right out of high school that he was a gopher employee for Sandra Clark at the Halls News, a weekly community newspaper that has become a five community newspaper, now owned by Bruce Hartmann and Jack McElroy.

Job posting for Deputy Admin. said salary is $83K+. . .

In a "You Have to be @&*%%*( Me" Moment

So, in a move to try and quiet the Republican grassroots and to try and take pressure off of Lying Paul Crilley*. This morning Greg McKay announces that the second runner-up to his position, who happens to be another Realtor (like McKay) will be the Election Commisson's Deputy Director. Frith hasn't been active in the last 6-8 years in Republican politics. Since he last mounted a campaign for Republican Party Chairman and then he backed out when he would be challenged by then Chair Sue Methvin.

Just because Frith was named the Halls Man of the Year four years ago, to what significance does that have for the communities of Tuckahoe, Corryton, Powell, Heiskell, Farragut, Gap Creek, Ramsey and the other 88 precincts and communities? So, McKay came out of Fountain City and moved to Bearden. Frith is obviously from Halls. There is nothing like two North Knox guys sticking together to stick the rest of us.

Next question will be. How much is Frith's salary and how often will he be in the office? Will he still be selling real estate? Will he still be attending college?

Press Release: The Knox County Administrator of Elections, Greg Mackay, announced that he has named Scott Frith as Deputy Director. "The reappointment process resulted in a host of new ideas to improve our office," Mackay said, "We are honored to have someone of Scott's integrity and caliber to join our team."

Scott Frith, a Realtor with Realty Executives for the last ten years, has served as President of Keep Knoxville Beautiful, on the board of Legacy Parks Foundation, and was named Halls Man of the Year in 2005. Frith was the runner-up to Mackay in last month's vote for the Administrator of Elections position.

*Paul Crilley is now referred to as lying Paul Crilley because of this interview with Blogger Micheal Silence. You are known by the comments you make Crilly and now you are just like Commissioner R. Larry Smith. We know you are lying when you're lips are moving.

I'm With Victoria and the DeFreese Family

If you were one of the ones to receive this letter dated July 13, 2009 which was three days before Victoria DeFreese made her public announcemnt on July 16, 2009. She intends to be a candidate for County Commission from District 9. Count me in as a member of "I'm with Victoria." You see the problem is that local female politicians lack the ability to stand up, they instead are rubber stamps for the establishment. The two local exceptions are School Board Member Cindy Buttry and former Appointed County Commissioner Victoria DeFreese.

Dear

I write to inform you of my serious intent to run for Commissioner of Knox County District 9. My appointed term demonstrated my commitment to good government, reining in spending, defending the rights of the ordinary citizen from government infringement, advocating for fair-bid processes, scrutinizing all lucrative contracts negotiated with Knox County, and fiscally responsible stewardship of your tax dollars.

As you know, Knox County must redistrict the County Precincts/Wards because of changes made to the charter approved by the voters to decrease the size of County Commission. Last November, the voters allowed for the reduction of County Commission to 1 commissioner per district with 2 at-large seats. The Knox County Redistricting Committee approved a plan last week that will place Gap Creek (Ward #92: Gap Creek School, 1920 Kimberlin Heights) into district 8 and incorporate the University of Tennessee (Ward #10-S, University Ctr, 1502 W. Cumberland Ave.) into district 9. This plan is subject to approval by County Commission in November. I intend to represent the newly configured District 9 as your public servant.

My service as an appointed Knox County Commissioner for District 9 from February to August 2008 demonstrated my commitment to good government:

•Did not blindly approve government spending but regularly questioned all items in the budget.

•Defended your right to privacy and right to freedom of expression from government interference as provided by the First and Fourth Amendments of the United States Constitution. I challenged the application of the Tennessee Open Records Act to constituent expression via e-mail, phone logs, faxes, handwritten notes, letters, etc. I argued that turning over this information would chill constituent expression.

•Demanded fair bid processes and far-reaching public advertisements when liquidating county property, such as old South High. Originally, I advocated land banking the property rather than letting a powerful developer have it for $1; however, responding to community desires, I encouraged a well-advertised auction of the property that brought a high bid of $117,700.

•Investigated and challenged contracts made with Knox County. After in-depth personal research, I refused to sign off on a mediated settlement with a mulch contractor even when urged to do so by the Knox County Law Director. Since then, I have been contacted and questioned by the FBI, EPA federal criminal agents, and the TBI concerning environmental problems and public corruption. I have proved that I will take valiant positions when I suspect corruption with lucrative contracts with Knox County. The Knox County Chancellor, John Weaver, vindicated my stance on this contract when he wrote in his January 16, 2009 opinion, “The closeness of the relationship between the County and the defendants [mulch contractor] warrants scrutiny.”

•In fulfillment of my oath of office, I consistently defended your tax dollars from misuse. I made a motion that Knox County Commission ask for the resignation of Mayor Mike Ragsdale after several audits that discovered a questionable hospitality fund, purchasing card violations, and awarding suspect community grants. Even though this motion was defeated, I boldly demonstrated that I will defend your tax dollars.

As the time to qualify as a candidate for Knox County Commission nears, I wanted you to know that I have been encouraged by the people of South Knoxville to be your public servant. My public announcement of my intent to run for County Commission Seat 9 will be made at the South Knox Republican Club meeting this Thursday, July 16 which meets at the Optimist Club at 7:00 p.m. (Gary Underwood Park, 6131 Moore Road).

As always I depend upon your friendship and support.

Sincerely,

Victoria DeFreese

Senator Stanley Being Encouraged Not to Resign?

Here's a little gem from the State Capitol as reported by knoxnews. Word from around Nashville is that Senator Stanley is being encouraged NOT to resign as Chairman as "this is just a one day story." Is that really the precedent that Candidate for Governor and Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey really wants on his watch?

District Attorney General Bud Gilbert?

Sources from near the City County Building tell us that word is circulating that former State Senator and current Kennerly, Montgomery and Finley Attorney C. Coulter "Bud" Gilbert may be running to replace our District Attorney General Randy Nichols. Nichols has indicated that he will NOT run for re-election again. It is time to spend time with his lovely wife Laura and their grandchildren. Sources also indicate that Gilbert may have been the attorney at KMF that lost the firms long time client, KUB.

Cronyism is Alive and Well in the City County Building

The crony's name is Todd Cook. In late 2002 or 2003, Todd Cook needed out of the Sheriff's Department. So, he was appointed as the Director of Probation and Pre-Trial Release. In this position, Cook answered to the Knox County Mayor and was paid in excess of $80,000.00 a year with a drive home car.

Now, that the current Mayor will be vacating office about a year from now Cook has been lobbying to have a position with a secure future. On Monday, the Knox County Commission will move Cook under the Knox County Sheriffs Department. Now, the Knox County Merit System rules state that if you have been out from under the Merit System for more than a year, the employee must re-test and begin at a first step position.

Now, I don't blame Sheriff Jones, he is doing what he thinks is right. What's wrong is bringing a political hack into a good department. This Todd Cook is the same individual that a year or two ago got up in front of commission in tears, made outlandish claims that were refuted within 10 minutes by our Knox County District Attorney General, Randy Nichols. Cook was consoled by former Sheriff's Department employee Dwight Van de Vate. Van de Vate would NOT allow Cook to respond to the facts that were stated by our fine District Attorney General, Randy Nichols.

If this cronyism continues unchecked and unhindered the next thing you know they will be wanting to move Van de Vate to some secure bunker with the Sheriffs Department in the City County Building.

Todd Cook Exhibit One, this is of Cook making outlandish, tearful claims and Van de Vate consoling him, sending him out of the room and trefusing for Cook to speak or answer any additional questions.

Todd Cook Exhibit Two - This is our District Attorney General Randy Nichols setting the record straight on the outlandish, tearful comments made by Todd Cook.

For the record, Todd Cook has NEVER appeared at County Commission to answer and put aside these tearful, outlandish claims and to answer the questions about how his story doesn't match with what our District Attorney General, Randy Nichols said on December 10, 2007. On December 10, 2007, Cook said that he would and Van de Vate said that Cook would. Neither one have lived up to what they said Cook would do.

Karen Carson's Bistro Buzz Re-do

On July 6, 2009 in the Shopper News it promoted Karen Carson as the July 8, 2009 Bistro Buzz guest host. As we detailed here last week, the July 13, 2009 Shopper had no detail about the Bistro Buzz hosted by Karen Carson on July 8th. Leaving one to assume that no one appeared to talk with Carson. Today's Shopper details that a week later on July 15, 2009 Karen Carson had a Bistro Buzz re-do. The best she could muster was to have her husband appear about a volunteer organization that he volunteers with. It should be noted that the Bistro Buzz occurs on Wednesdays from 10:45 - 11:45 p.m. when most science and/or engineering employees in Oak Ridge are working.

The next Bistro Buzz is this Wednesday 10:45 - 11:45 with State Representative Ryan Haynes as the guest host.

Haslam Campaign is Funded by the Wealthest

Thanks to the local community newspaper, Knoxville Focus for pointing out that the Knoxville Mayor has averaged political contributions of $1,004.91 per contributor. Certainly, this is an indication of a wealthy gas gouging fuel retailer that has connections to raise a large sum of money. It is also an indication of a wealthy gas gouging fuel retailer that is out of touch with the everyday man and woman in Tennessee. In this economy, how many citizens can afford to give the Knoxville Mayor $1,004.91? How many employees of the gas gouging fuel retailer can afford to give him $1,004.91? Surely, the employees of the corporate office can and have contributed but not a majority of the gas gouging fuel retailers employees.

While the Mayor's campaign team will boast of having contributions from two thirds of the states counties. In reality at a recent Davidson County Republican picnic only 1 in 6 Republicans supported the Knoxville Mayor. While 5 of 6 Republicans chose another Republican candidate. While the Knoxville Mayor's campaign has boasted that they have raised money on the level of Bob Corker and he is now Tennessee's Sophmore United States Senator.

In channeling former Democrat Vice President candidate Lloyd Bentsen in response to the Knoxville Mayor. "I know Bob Corker, Bob Corker is a friend of mine, You Knoxville Mayor are no Bob Corker!" Also, Bob Corker had the gift of a young, immature opponent that had a Memphis Meltdown. The three candidates that the Knoxville Mayor must face are not young, immature and not likely to have a meltdown. The Knoxville Mayor is more likely to have a temper tantrum when he is rejected in the next preference poll.

It has also been noted that the Knoxville Mayor has never had to face an opponent that is a man. While he can attempt to intimidate former opponents by refusing to debate them. He refused multiple requests by organizations to debate his last opponent. He will not be able to intimidate and refuse debating Congressman Zach Wamp, Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey or Shelby County District Attorney General Bill Gibbons.

Here is the link to this weeks Knoxville Focus, the article is found on page 8 or it is also below.

3,871 contributions from sixty-six counties

Wednesday, Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam reported that his gubernatorial campaign has received $3,890,137 in contributions for the January to June reporting period, besting the combined total of the other Republican candidates, and setting a record for this point in a Tennessee statewide campaign. The previous record was set by now U.S. Senator Bob Corker in 2005.

This new record reflects 3,871 contributions from sixty-six Tennessee counties and demonstrates the early grassroots support the campaign has built across the state. The number of contributions is also a record for this point in a Tennessee statewide campaign.

“I’m so grateful for the support we’re receiving from all over the state,” said Haslam. “Our team has done a fantastic job, and we’ll be able to build on this success.”

“I said when we announced our initial statewide finance committee that it was the most excited and energized group I had ever worked with, and this impressive total reinforces that,” said Kim Kaegi, Finance Director for the campaign. “And having donors in two-thirds of Tennessee’s counties is an unbelievable start.”

Bill Haslam is the two term Mayor of Knoxville. He was re-elected in 2007 with 87% of the vote. His combination of executive and public service experience makes him uniquely qualified to be Tennessee’s next Governor.

Bill and Crissy Haslam, have two daughters, Annie and Leigh, and a son, Will, who resides in Knoxville with his wife, Hannah.

News Sentinel Endorses for Knox County Mayor

All of Jack McElroy's columns have been strange lately. I hear that Hartmann has been calling several facilities in preparation. But today's column is an endorsement of Tim Hutchison and Tim Burchett for Knox County Mayor.

So, there's no need for the two of them to appear for a candidate interview with the editorial board, Jack McElroy has already endorsed them both. Good for both of them, I guess.

Foster Arnett and a Pattern

Sources in the County Clerk's office have told us that every two weeks when the Clerk employees are getting paid that Foster Arnett has established a pattern. That pattern is sending someone home, permanently. It is also interesting to note the new hires that Foster is bringing in. It seems that Mrs. Arnett may want to take notice of at least one new hire, a "friend" from Foster's past.

Wamp Leads in Second Poll in One Week

This weekend at the Davidson County Republican Picnic, Zach Wamp and Ron Ramsey tied for first. Leaving the Knoxville Mayor as a distant third. Only one in six Davidson County Republicans desire a gas gouging retailer as the Republican nominee. We posted about it here.

Now thanks to Nashville Post we discover that Third District Congressman Zach Wamp leads in another Republican preference poll. Here is the post about the poll. The poll was conducted by The Southern Political Report. So, what is Tom Ingram doing as the guru of the gas gouging retailer? It is obvious what Bob Davis is doing for the Third District Congressman.

If the election to determine the Republican nominee for governor was held today and you would likely vote in that primary, who would you vote for?

Wamp (22%)
Haslam (15%)
Ramsey (7%)
Gibbons (4%)
Other (13%)
Undecided (39%)

Seventh District Commissioner Violates Sunshine Law?

R.L. Smith, Seventh District Commissioner was speaking with Appointed Seventh District Commissioner Michele Carringer tonight at the West Knox Republican Club Picnic. He was overheard to mention County Commissioner Chairman Tank Strickland's name and was discussing an upcoming meeting.

Is this a violation of the Open Meetings / Sunshine Law? Where are you Jack McElroy?

West Knox Republican Club Picnic Tonight

Great BBQ with all the trimmings. Along with Lemonade, Tea and Water for drinks. City Council candidates Ken Knight, Nick Della Volpe were in attendance. State Senators Jamie Woodson and Tim Burchett, State Representatives Bill Dunn, Stacy Campfield, Frank Niceley and my State Representative Ryan Haynes were in attendance. County Commissioner Craig Leuthold, Richard Briggs, Larry Smith, Brad Anders and Appointed Commissioner Michele Carringer all were in attendance. Register of Deeds Sherry Witt, Trustee Fred Sisk, Criminal Court Clerk Joy McCroskey along with General Sessions Judge Geoff Emery and Patricia Hall Long were present. Congressman Duncan's wife Lynn, son and daughter in law John and Lindsey and several members of his staff. Former Property Assessor John Whitehead and Former Sheriff Tim Hutchison were present. Also, Community Newspaper Owner Steve Hunley and Community Newspaper Editor Sandra Clark were present and Clark was the only one with a camera tonight.

Circuit Court Judge Dale Workman served as the cake auctioneer. Allison Burchett's home made Peanut Butter Pie brought $60, in Russ Jensen out bidding State Senator Jamie Woodson. The Hornback's were the recipients of 12 cupcakes from the Cupcakery donated by our State Representative Ryan Haynes. I hope I didn't leave anyone out of this list.

The first activity was a ceremonial flag folding. It was a moving exercise as each fold was explained.

Senator Tim Burchett and his wife Allison. Burchett is always checking his back. Are you paranoid Senator?

County Commissioner Brad and Jennifer Anders daughter, Addison. Addison was the star of the crowd and as you can see from this photograph, she is tapping Senator Burchett on the back. It is believed that she was asking him about that education bill that he voted on this year. She also wanted to know how that bill would positively affect her experience in a few years.

Commissioner Anders with daughter Addison. Jennifer, Brad's lovely wife and mother of Addison is to the left. Commissioner Anders represents District Six which includes Hardin Valley, Ball Camp, Karns and Powell. He is one of the best of the current 19 Commissioners.

On the left with the beard is Ray Jenkins, the hardest working GOP Chairman in the last three years. Beside him is former Fourth District Commissioner Lee Tramel. Jenkins is Chairman from 2009-2011. Here's hoping he will run for re-election in 2011 and serve another term 2011-2013.

Sandra Clark Is Hoping Against All Hopes To Eliminate Hunley

Before reading this post, I make this disclosure that I and neither Sandra Clark nor Steve Hunley can be counted as friends of Brian's Blog or Brian Hornback. Both of them can be counted as acquaintances but not friends that I would socialize, eat dinner or attend the same party functions with. Here is the post.

The second Sandra Clark Gossip and Lies from this weeks Shopper publications reveals her obvious birthday wish.

Will Steve Hunley enter the race for Knox County mayor? That’s the word on the street about the man who owns a newspaper for which he doesn’t write or take pictures. Trust me. People don’t own newspapers to make money!

Apparently, Clark is hoping to eliminate a competitor if Hunley runs and is elected as Knox County Mayor, then she is obviously hoping the Knoxville/Knox County Focus will cease to exist.

Sandra Clark first purchased and continued the Halls Shopper which evolved into the Halls Shopper News. She then added a Powell Shopper as a sister publication. Hunley then began the Fountain City Focus. Clark then unable to operate, print the newspaper and keep all things running. She then sold it to the parent company of the News Sentinel. With Clark and all Shopper employees answering to Publisher Bruce Hartmann. Hunley then took the Fountain City Focus countywide making his publication the Knoxville/Knox County Focus. Here is Hunley's publications website.

It seems Hunley has been able to do as an owner of a weekly community newspaper something that Clark was and has been unable to do. So, while Clark says "People don’t own newspapers to make money!" Only people like Clark, I would presume.

By the way, I have witnessed Hunley take pictures that appeared in the Focus. So, Clark is wrong on that account as well.

There Is a Difference

Have you seen this weeks Sandra Clark's Gossip and Lies from the Shopper publications?

Tyler Harber’s theft of e-mails from then-GOP chair Chad Tindell was cited as a crime that Nichols chose to overlook. Now federal prosecutors are throwing the book at UT student David Kernell. His offense? Hacking into the e-mail of Sarah Palin.

Let's clear up one misstatement made by Ms. Clark. Chad Tindell was then the former GOP Chairman. As has been documented in Ms. Clark's own publication the alleged theft occurred the weekend that he was replaced as the GOP Chairman. Tindell was replaced by former Chairman Brian Hornback.

Secondly, there is a difference between a one in a million Attorney and the Governor of Alaska and there is a difference between a former County Republican Chairman and the Republican Vice Presidential nominee for the United States of America.

Silent Partner by Dina Matos McGreevey

So, we have established that I enjoy reading mostly non-fiction especially if it involves biographies of political figures. I enjoy business books like Jim Collins and John Kotter. The only fiction that I really read are John Grisham and Vince Flynn.

So, I was at McKay's one day and found the biography of Governor Jim McGreevey. He is the former New Jersey Governor that served like two and a half years. He resigned in disgrace because his homosexual lover was blackmailing him for something like $50 million dollars. At the time McGreevey was married to his second wife and the mother of his second child. He fathered a child by his first wife.

At the same moment that I found his book. I found his second wife's book. So I bought them both. After talking with my good friend Jake, we both concluded that I should read her book first. I just completed it. Now, I am not looking forward to reading his book because she details lies in his book.

But, then again if you are married and have an adulterous affair with a same sex partner. Isn't your whole life and existence a lie? I digress. Dina and Governor McGreevey were married almost four years. I say almost because the four year anniversary was October 7, 2005 and he had announced in August he was resigning and they parted ways from the Governor's mansion on November 15, 2005. As of early 2007 they were still not divorced. He wasn't acting quickly for some reason.

It is a fascinating read. She appears real and forthright. I will reserve reaction to her ex-husband after I read his biography. By the way, Governor McGreevey is/was a Democrat. If that means anything to any of you.

What Happens When You Host The Bistro and No One Shows

Here is the link for tomorrow's Farragut Shopper News. It is interesting to note that there is NO column for "The Bistro Buzz" as you can see below from last weeks Shopper News that Karen Carson was to be the host. This would normally have been John Griess week. But, John and his family are on a much deserved vacation. So, Shopper News Editor Sandra Clark arranged for Carson to guest host. As you can see it was advertised in last weeks paper as a reminder to Carson to show up.

So, when Carson showed up and no citizen or anyone else appeared there was nothing to write and publish. Thus, the Buzz isn't and wasn't buzzing. Recently when two other school board members appeared at The Buzz there were a page or more of newsprint. Sixth district Thomas Deakins and Third district Cindy Buttry. There is a difference in being effective and ineffective. It seems Carson is ineffective not only with school board actions but when she is to appear at the Buzz, it comes up with not one word, picture or substance printed in the Shopper.

Sunday Lunch at the Haslam's

As we check in at the Haslam family lunch this Sunday afternoon, we hear the youngest Haslam boy, William (they call him Bill or Billy) say "Daddy, yesterday I tried but the contest was won by that bully up in Sullivan County and that guy that everybody loves from Chattanooga. I talked to Tommy on the way home and he said that you, daddy will have to buy me Davidson County. I want it, I want it, I want it. Daddy buy me love and support in Davidson County." This is what William (called Bill or Billy) is begging his daddy for as recorded in this mornings Tennessean.

While, no word on if Daddy will buy Davidson County this early in the contest. A phone call was made to Little Jack Mc and assurances were made and there be no word of this contest printed in the daily bird cage liner known as the News-Sentinel.

Justice Served

Concerning this breaking news out of North Carolina and in the words of an avid reader and occasional contributer of Brian's Blog. "Justice has been served. It won't replace the losses, nor make it any easier, but at least the families won't have to endure more pain via a trial for the "accused.""

We agree.

They Can't Even Give It Away.

This from our friends at the local liberal blog.

Shopper News 1 Knoxville/Knox County Focus 0

Joe Rector has apparently left the Knoxville/Knox County Focus as his column has appeared on the Shopper News website this evening. Look for Rector in tomorrow's print edition of the Shopper News.

Pray for our Neighbors to the East

Here is a story, Here is another one and here is one that details the death of the 15 year old.

The Cherokee County, SC sheriff's department and the Gaffney City police department have cancelled all vacations, on July 4 weekend no less. Over 100 investigators including the FBI and South Carolina's State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) are working on this case.

There are members of our community that are from Gaffney, SC. They know the families of one or more victims. I have been to Gaffney, SC on many occasions visiting a manufacturing facility located in Gaffney. The hundreds of people that I have met and talked to in Gaffney are good people. No community deserves to have a killer on the loose. No family deserves this. Please pray for this community.

R.I.P Air McNair

Sad News this Independence Day out of Downtown Nashville.

Town of Farragut 2009 4th of July Parade, Our View.

A good time was had by all. We were sitting near the intersection of Campbell Station Road and Kingston Pike, sitting on the South side of Kingston Pike.

First, Sheriff Jimmy "J.J." Jones and his department, motorcycles, DARE cars and helicopters. Sheriff Jones gave out cool footballs.

The boy scouts with our flag.

Then our Farragut High School Marching Admirals Band. They were AWESOME as always.

Then our Farragut High School NJ ROTC with color guard as well.

Even an appearance by my hero, Ernest T. Bass. There were other characters from the Andy Griffith Show. But, they don't really matter when you're an Ernest T. Bass fan. I said "Hey, Ernest T." and he said "It's me, It's me. It's Ernest T."

Then it was the lazy frog radio station.

Then the Q Generation radio station. It's all country music without the talk, talk and more talking.

This church float caught my attention. It said "The Cross is our Statue of Liberty."

And then finally Commissioner Mike Hammond was walking with Mickey Mouse. Poor Mickey Mouse didn't realize who he was walking with. Without being degrading to Mickey Mouse, Hammond's actions while on Commission can be summed as a cartoonish. How appropriate! We have since talked with Mickey Mouse and told him that he has brought damage to his image and he said that he will NOT be hanging around that Commissioner anymore. After all, Mickey Mouse told us that he discovered that the Commissioner has been hanging around with frogs and has warts and all.

Happy 4th. Was This The Greatest Generation?

A regular reader Chip forwarded us the following, it is worth noting.

4TH OF JULY

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signedthe Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and torturedbefore they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army;another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died fromwounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and theirsacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, welleducated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowingfull well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw hisShips swept from the seas by the British Navy.He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced tomove his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress withoutpay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were takenfrom him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer,Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the BritishGeneral Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemyjailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying.Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn't.So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday andsilently thank these patriots.

It's not much to ask for the price they paid.

Remember: freedom is never free!

Robin For Tennessee

Oh, Yeah. While I am gonna miss my buddy, Congressman Zach Wamp as TN's Third District Congressman. He is gonna be our next Governor of TN. So, to take his place. It will be my friend Robin Smith. Robin has recently stepped down as Tennessee Republican Party Chair. She was the Chair that took the Democrats out in the State House. She also understood her job as the Lead Republican and beat them Demo's like they ain't been beat in years. So, she has some political enemies and they will spew their hate. I understand that to a much smaller degree having been the Lead Republican in Knox County from 2005-2007. They have and continue to spew hate about me even today. That's o.k. we won, they lost. They are just a group of losers.

Now, go check out Robin's website, here. The photo above was taken last June when Robin and I were at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville for the John McCain town hall meeting.

Can You Hear Me Now? I Love My Verizon.

Thanks to Kimberly at Moxie Interactive for pointing me in the right direction for this video. In the past, I have posted a youtube video where the "Can you hear me now" guy and team randomly shows up following someone. This video is equally funny and involved hundreds of people. I love my Verizon Wireless network. Also as a brand how can you dispute the success of their brand marketing?

Can I Be As Strong In The Faith?

Visit the Patrick Bradbury remembrance website, here.

In Knoxville, Haslam and Council Force Homeless To The Street

This from today's local daily paper produced by and at the Big Metal Shed on the Hill. So, the homeless can't be on the sidewalk in the City of Knoxville. They do not have a home to live in. So, I guess now they must resort to walking in between the cars on the city streets? Just think if the Knoxville Mayor becomes Governor this will be a statewide law. Now, that's a clever way to eliminate homelessness. City Council and the Mayor should be ashamed of themselves. They will not be, they are all probably patting themselves on the back for how smart they are.

What Are They Smoking In Minnesota ?

First they gave us Jesse Ventura as their Governor and now they send an idiotic moron to the U.S. Senate.

Corey DeHart Tenure Remains Intact

Early this morning, Corey DeHart's tenure as a Knox County Schools teacher was left as is. This is a decision that is contrary to Superintendent McIntyre's recommendation. Sources that followed the hearing closer than any member of the Brian's Blog team said that the Knox County Law Department Attorney appeared to be less prepared and competent than the Tennessee Education Association Attorney Virginia McCoy. McCoy represented teacher DeHart.

The damage to Corey DeHart's name, professional image and reputation has been severely hindered. We hope that he is able to fully recover from the damage created by all the adverse publicity put out by the local daily newspaper.

An interesting quirk in this issue is that either Superintendent McIntyre or Corey DeHart may appeal to Knox County Chancery Court for a FINAL over riding decision. Half of the individuals (that are close to this incident) that we have spoken with believe that Superintendent McIntyre is likely to appeal. If that occurs, it will be an interesting development in that all 9 of Superintendent's employers decision could be appealed by their employee. We will wait 30 days to see what happens.
