Karen Carson Gets One Right

In a workshop tonight, School Board Chairman Karen Carson said "I am a non Solomon". We would concur with her statement that she is not Solomon or even close to Solomon. Solomon was known as the leader with great knowledge and ability to determine what is right or wrong.

The part that perplexes us is how it even came to her mind that she even considered herself as Solomon or thought that the people of Knox County considered her Solomon. After all, with successful businesswoman Laurie Alford announcing in mid December 2007 with the election on February 5, 2008. Alford garnered more than 40% of the vote.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Tiime by Mark Haddon.

I have concluded the third of the four Farragut High School books on the summer reading list. I read the first book, Marley & Me a couple of weeks ago. Last week, I completed The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. This weekend I completed The Curious Incident of the dog in the night time.

The story is good. The only exception is the overuse of a specific word in the profanity family. The story is told by an autistic young man that began investigating the murder of a neighborhood dog. While he works to solve the mystery he discovers much more.

Of the three books that I have read all are good but Marley& Me is the best. I am still waiting on the copy of Perseplious that I have purchased. Which is the fourth of the Farragut High School summer reading list.

Happy Independence Week

This song is written and recorded by country music recording artist Luke Stricklin. Luke spent time defending our country in Iraq. As we approach July 4, 2008 this week. Remember to be thankful for our independence and how our country is bringing independence and freedom to Iraq.

Whats Wrong With Congress

Here is the latest video message of U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss of Georgia. He explains what has caused our country to be where it is today and what is wrong with Congress.

I especially agree with his concluding statement. "I am a Republican. But I don't work for the Republican Party. I work for you."

Check out Saxby's website, here. It has the best beginning of any political website on the world wide web today.

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

I have completed the second of four books on the Farragut High School Summer Reading List. You select one of teh four, I have set out to read all four. Marley & Me was first. The Glass Castle was second and is now completed. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time is next and finally it is Persepolis.

The Glass Castle is a memoir of Jeanette Walls life. An unusual life by normal standards, if life in a family has a normal standard. Her father had great visions. Her mother had great dreams. The four children lived a life of continual motion. In the end, Jeannette turned out to be successful.

It ain't where you came from or what you had or didn't have. It is about the life skills you obtained and your ability to be successful in the end. How do you define success?

When Will the New Commissioners Take Over?

The positions that are on the ballot on August 7, 2008 are not all for new terms. Yes, the four school boarders, property assessor and law director are for a full four year term. The others are for vacancies.

Sources indicate to Brian's Blog that there are several legal opinions that at the moment that the election results are certified that the winners of those elections can and should be sworn into office. The positions are County Commission seats 1A, 2B, 4A, 4B, 5C, 6A, 8B and 9A. In addition, the positions of Sheriff, County Clerk, Trustee, Register of Deeds and Criminal Court Judge Div. II.

It takes 7 - 10 days following the election for the Knox County Election Commission to certify the election and its results. At the moment following the certification these elected officials are entitled to take their positions, as the appointees at that moment are not the individuals elected by the citizens in their district.

Hancock

My awesome wife had obtained tickets for us to attend a screening of the new movie Hancock. We went this evening, Hot 104.5 along with Regal Entertainment Group and several others were the sponsors. It was held at the Regal Riviera Stadium 8 in downtown Knoxville. This was our first visit to the downtown theater. A pleasant experience.

Will Smith is an outstanding Super hero. A little of each of us are part of Hancock. We are all misunderstood and people have views of us that are not really who we are. Hancock has great special effects. The story line is good. It hits the theaters next week. Check it out, it's GOOOOOD.

The Time is Now..

I bought two copies of the News-Sentinel yesterday. Why? For evidence. Because I overheard that Jack McElroy had printed the orange ballot and the white ballot as part of the Community section. He printed it not as a information piece. He printed the ballot so that readers could get 30 signatures on the orange and 30 signatures on the white and submit them as part of the 40,000, This is proof that McElroy has moved beyond Editor to political boss wannabe.

He and his Associate Editor David Keim violate journalistic ethics by sitting as a panelist on WBIR's Inside Tennessee where they handicap political races and then they go back to the Sentinel and conduct candidate interviews and endorse candidates. Just review the tivo and see what they said about each race after the endorsements and after the election.

This printing of the orange and white ballots has crossed a line. It has expressly violated the E.W. Scripps Ethics policy on political activity. In addition, McElroy has now made the Sentinel a $7,500 contributor to Knox Accountability. A financial contributor to a political cause. He has now made the Sentinel the major collector of petition signors. Here is the E.W. Scripps Ethics policy of political activity. Thanks to Number9 for posting this on my friend, Terry Frank's blog.

If you have any issue with the link. I have posted it below. The bottom line is that the Time is Now and Now you have to call 888-397-4911 to file a complaint on McElroy's political activity .

Here is the
link to the ethics policy.

From the E.W. Scripps Ethics Policy:
POLITICAL ACTIVITY

“The Company remains independent in all political matters and will not make monetary contributions, directly or indirectly, to political campaigns or causes, or to political parties. Moreover, its officers will not make such contributions acting on behalf of the Company. Rare exceptions may be made to this prohibition, but then only if permitted by law and approved by the President of the Company.

Although the Company is independent in all political matters, employees are encouraged to register to vote, with party affiliations, and to vote. Employees may pursue their own personal political activities, but may not, either inadvertently or intentionally, represent their personal views or contributions to be those of the Company. Employees must avoid any suggestion that their relationship with the Company constitutes an endorsement of any kind.

Journalists and others working in newsrooms must abide by a more restrictive standard, given the disinterested neutrality from which news organizations must work. They must not serve in elected or politically appointed positions. They must not participate in political fund-raising, political organizing, nor other activities designed to enhance a candidate, a political party or a political-interest organization. They must not make contributions of record to political campaigns nor engage in other such activity that might associate an employee’s name with a political candidate or a political cause.”

How many violations of the Scripps Ethics Policy will Editor McElroy violate by actively participating in collecting signatures for KCP? At least five violations. This is the problem with Elitists. Rules and policies do not apply to them. At least in their minds.

If you find this to be an egregious violation of the public trust you may directly contact the E. W. Scripps company at 1-888-397-4911. This number will be answered only by the Ethical Program Director who will insure the matter is investigated, and that appropriate confidentiality is maintained.

Journey to the Center of the Earth

I just returned from the movie premiere of Journey to the Center of the Earth. It was an interesting night. First at a little after 5:00 p.m. I spent some quality time with Halls Republican residents Ted and Carla Hatfield. I then had a very cordial conversation with Inside Tennessee panelist Don Bosch. I also had a pleasant conversation with County Commissioner Mike Hammond. The food provided by Fleming's was exceptional. Fleming's always provides an excellent presentation. I passed E.W. Scripps Publisher Bruce Hartmann in the hall and we spoke. The stars and director of the movie spoke in the VIP tent. Following their remarks we moved into the theater.

We ventured into the lobby area to see and hear the public remarks from the stars. As we waited for the public remarks of stars Josh Hutcherson and Brendan Fraser, I realized that someone was close to me as I turned around, I realized that Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam had seen us in the crowd and had crossed over to speak to us. It was a pleasant conversation. We discussed what our kids were doing for the summer and briefly discussed the budgets of the city and county. My son was able to meet both stars and they autographed his ticket.

We then ventured into the theater, no previews were shown. That was unusual. The movie is GREAT. I am not going to attempt a review as Brian's Blog is not a movie review blog. I will tell you that on July 11, 2008 when the movie opens it is well worth the cost of admission. The 3D ain't your daddy's 3D.

As we left a goodie bag was given to each patron. It was a fun night. In the end over $340,000.00 was raised for Variety the children's charity and that is the most important part about the evening at Regal Cinemas Pinnacle Stadium 18 in Turkey Creek.

What a great community we live in that we have a corporate citizen like Regal Entertainment Group that always give back to the community in more ways than one.

Unfair Criticism of Knox County by McElroy and Crew

The guys in the metal shed on the hill (News-Sentinel) were at it again yesterday. They had a front page story trying to make Bill Haslam their favorite Republican Governor candidate look good, while making the county guys look bad. This time the county guys didn't deserve it.

The criticism is over the City of Knoxville having to pay more of the bill to end homelessness. We will now review the reason that this is unfair criticism.

First, Former City of Knoxville Mayor Victor Ashe surrendered the city's contribution to indigent care. Leaving Knox County with the responsibility to carry the total expense for indigent care. Who is covered by indigent care? The working poor and the homeless.

Second, a few years ago Knox County had proposed giving Volunteer Ministry Center a community grant. City Councilman Rob Frost opposed this grant in an action that could only be explained as a NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) reaction.

Third, Knox County has continually contributed to the Inner Faith Health Clinic while the City of Knoxville has NOT. Several Knox County Commissioners have also contributed to the Free Health Clinic in South Knox County.

Are the actions of McElroy and Crew in promoting the credentials and actions of the current City Mayor to make his a viable candidate for Governor in 2010? Is it because they believe he is a better candidate for Governor than Congressman Zach Wamp, former Senate Majority Leader Dr. Bill Frist, M.D. or is it because the current City Mayor's dad buys thousands of News-Sentinels every Friday?

Knox Charter Pettiton and Knox Accountabilty Groups Are Elitist

In a televised interview with Gene Patterson on Tennessee This Week Gary Drinnen, the spokesman for both groups acknowledged the truth that both groups are elitist. He said "as an elitist group, we are the most open."

Signatures to be Thrown Out

Sources indicate that the first 352 -400 signatures of the Knox Accountability petitions will likely be contested and thrown out by the Knox County Election Commission. It appears that there is a state statute that states that in order to register to vote, to cast a vote that you must be of sound mind. The gathering of signatures at Sundown in the City where alcohol is involved is in violation of that state statute.

What does it say that they are gathering signatures only after people are intoxicated and 352-400 in an area where thousands gather every Thursday night during the spring and summer.

Phil Ballard for Property Assessor

Last night, the Knoxville Expo Center was colored orange and white. The event was a dinner, honoring Phil Ballard, Republican candidate for Knox County Property Assessor. Nearly 300 attended. The Prime Rib dinner was one of the best political dinner meals that I have enjoyed and I have attended a bunch of dinners since 1982.

A great job of hosting this dinner by Steve Hunley and John Mills. Jack and Joyce Huddleston were working hard to ensure that everyone had a great time.

Philbio (aka Phil Williams of NewsTalk 100) was the Special Master of Ceremonies. Someone remind me to post about how in 1982 - 1984, Phil Williams was an advisor of mine. Last night, Williams told some funny jokes. He kept saying he was glad that his mom wasn't there. However, he talked about his brother and I go to church with his brother and sister. Note to Philbio: for a nominal fee I can be quiet. (joking)

There was live music before and during dinner. Pastor Clarence Sexton gave the invocation. State Senator Tim Burchett led the Pledge. He and his beautiful wife Allison were in attendance. Elected Officials and candidates were recognized by the Knox County Republican Party Chair, Irene McCrary. Cindy Ballard, Phil's wife entertained. Bob Griffitts of Congressman Duncan's office read a statement that the Congressman read into the Congressional record honoring my friend and our public servant, Parkey Strader. Paula Rudder, Parkey's daughter accepted it on his behalf and read a statement from Parkey. State Senator Jamie Woodson then introduced Phil. Phil talked about his experience in the private sector and the need to keep running a professional Property Assessor's office.

My personal take-aways from this event. Our county has been fortunate to have had Parkey Strader run the office for seven terms from 1972-2000. He has served as my State Representative since 2004. In addition, We have been fortunate to have had the leadership of Republican Property Assessor John Whitehead since 2000. Whitehead has 30 plus years experience in the office, working as the Chief Deputy for Parkey Strader all of those years before. Whitehead's knowledge, leadership and experience can not be replaced.

On a political note: all countywide Republican candidates (except one) and nearly every Republican County Commissioner candidate was present. Foster "I don't pay out of county taxes" Arnett, candidate for County Clerk was not in attendance.

KnoxDems Elect Sylvia Woods as Chair

In a vote of 30-29 Sylvia Woods was elected Knox County Democrat Party Chair. Woods Replaces Don Daugherty, who resigned more than a week ago. Will Minter finished second with 29 votes.

Whoever said one vote doesn't make a difference, never ran for party chair of Knox County's minority party.

Congratulations Sylvia!

Knox County Commission Passes Budget...No New Money for Schools

The Knox County Commission met in a marathon meeting today. At the end of the day a Knox County budget was passed. The Commission after much talking about budget cuts, only cut $193,300.00. The Mayor promises another $1.5 million in additional cuts. The Great Schools Partnership and Project Grad dollars were set aside until Dr. McIntyre arrives in town.

Brian Hornback during his time as a school board member was involved in the creation and implementation of Project Grad and the Great Schools Partnership. In a future post he will detail the need for an examination of the success and shortcomings of these two "public/private" joint ventures.

The bottom line is that Knox County Schools received no new money in the budget approved today. Why? After all the School Board had a budget meeting on Monday evening and there was allot of talk about "fighting" for school employee raises, to match the level of county employee raises (2%). But for all the talking only the Third District School Board Member, Cindy Buttry and Eighth District School Board Member - Elect Bill Phillips attended the Commission meeting. Phillips was seen at different intervals but was always aware of what was going on. As for school staff, Interim Superintendent Roy Mullins attended at the beginning of the Commission meeting. The schools Finance guy Ron McPherson and PR guy Russ Oaks attended during the entire Commission meeting. Word is that Karen Carson came after the budget debate had concluded.

So for all the talk about developing a good school system into a great school system. For all the talk about taking care of school employees and the system. Today, the Knox County School Board members failed to walk their talk.

So, when you see the School Board Chair lady cater to the crowd at a school board meeting and panders to get a round of applause. It is all show, because today she too failed to walk the talk. She promised on Monday night that she would communicate to the Commission that if county employees get a 2% raise, then school employees should receive a 2% raise. Either she failed to deliver the message or she is ineffective in working with her colleagues on the other side of the street. Because not one member of Commission even proposed what she promised.

BREAKING NEWS: Senator Burchett is No Longer a Single Man

This came into the Brian's Blog office via our friend Tammy White at 3:45 p.m. today.

Friends-

I talked to Senator Burchett about 30 minutes ago and he told me he and Allison and their family were at Long's Drug Store having lunch and celebrating their marriage! I honestly didn't believe him so he handed the phone to his mamma and she confirmed the news that she has a new daughter-in-law!!!

Tim said he called Allison (his bride) this morning and asked her to attend the governor's press conference with him. According to Tim, Allison called him back and suggested they go get their marriage license this morning and get the Governor to perform the ceremony while he was in town. Hence..........Senator and Mrs. Tim Burchett! I am so excited for the happy couple and wish them a lifetime of love and happiness! Please join me in spreading the good news.

Best Regards-Tammy White

Congratulations and Best Wishes to Senator and Mrs. Burchett.

School Board Reacts to Staggered School Times. Brian's Blog Broke The Story

Brian's Blog posted this here and on School Matters on Wednesday. The News-Sentinel ran a story by Lola Alapo on Friday. The discussion on School Matters as of tonight totals 50 comments. The School Board heard the discussion from here and School Matters. Because at tonight's School Board workshop many of the board members voiced the opinion that this is dead. It is too soon to school starting and this is a decision that Dr. McIntyre and the board can study for future years.

Dan Murphy, said in response to receiving multiple emails it is as if people think that we're the village idiots.

Marley & Me - Farragut High School's Summer Reading Program

On May 20, 2008 Brian's Blog informed you of the Farragut High School Summer Reading Program. This is the fourth year that I have participated and I have five more years to go. However, the program is different this year than the past three years. This year everyone must read a 10 page essay and then choose one of four books. I have decided to read all four. The first one that I read is Marley & Me. Two reasons that I read Marley & Me first. One, Pamela Treacy in responding to the May 20th post said it was a good book. Two, it is the only hardback that I have of the four books.

The book is beyond description. My wife caught me several times laughing out loud. Even today as she and one of my sons were in the swimming pool. She told me that she saw me laughing out loud by the pool reading the book. Marley is a lovable, adhd dog that John and Jenny Grogan obtain early in their marriage. Marley is a riot through the years of three children and moving from South Florida to Pennsylvania.

If you love animals or have fond memories of an animal growing up, this book is for you. You will be laughing and at the end you will face the sadness. This book will stay on my bookshelf and stay in my library. I could see me reading it again in a year or two. I understand that a movie has been made and is set to release near Christmas.

George Korda Leads WATE in Discriminatory Comments

On WATE's Tennessee This Week that aired today, George Korda appeared on the "Last Word." Korda who serves as the political analyst for WATE in responding to the issue of Republican candidate Foster Arnett's payment of his delinquent taxes in Union County being a factor in the County Clerk's race said. "if they were Knox County taxes it would be a factor, but they were Union County taxes."

WATE through it's political analyst are now on record as having discriminatory attitudes toward the citizens and government of Union County. WATE should publicly disavow the discriminatory comments of its political analyst in defaming the good people of Union County.

Sources close to the Union County Trustee indicate that the Trustee and the Trustee office has been in contact with Foster Arnett and had been attempting to collect the debt. It was only after Brian's Blog broke the story and before the News-Sentinel could contact Foster, he traveled up to Maynardville and paid the taxes. He was in arrears for 2006 and 2007 and paid $1,084.72 in settling these debts.

It should be noted that of the three panelists on WATE's Tennessee This Week's Last Word, two of the three panelist are former colleagues of Foster's during their tenure working within the Victor Ashe administration of the City of Knoxville.

How Did It Happen?

O.k. a couple of weeks ago the News-Sentinel links to a 99 page Idleaire investors list. Everyone with 1,000, 2,000 or 20,000 shares are subjected to the public attention. The newspaper writes about conflicts of interest of elected officials.

However, one man sits in his plush office in the metal shed on the hill on News Sentinel Drive reading the paper, he never ventures down the hall to inform his employee, Business writer and Editor Josh Flory that "hey, they left me and my 18,000 or so shares of the list. Be sure that I am disclosed as well. Because it is the right thing to do."

You ask, Who is that gentleman in the plush office in the metal shed on the hill, that owns 18,000 or so shares of Idleaire? Bruce Hartmann, publisher of the News-Sentinel. You know he and his company backed Jack McElroy in the lawsuit against the County Commission. In that lawsuit it was all about being open and transparent. How about Bruce's actions in being open and transparent?

Brian's Blog First With Staggered Start Times Story

On Wednesday, we posted this story about the possible staggered start times for some Knox County Schools. In that post, we obtained and posted the "proposed" staggered start time schedule with a request to Knox County Schools. Brian Hornback then posted the link on School Matters and an intense discussion has occurred over there for the past 36 hours.

Now, today 48 hours later the News-Sentinel has a story about the proposal. Brian's Blog first with the report, fair and balanced.

Huckabee on Fox News

Our GOP Presidential Primary candidate, Mike Huckabee has inked a deal with Fox News. Here are the sketchy details, from Huckabee's Facebook page. More later.

Huckabee to Be Political Commentator on FOX News Channel
Today at 2:08am

HUCKABOOM HITS TV
By Howard Kurtz

Mike Huckabee may have flamed out as a presidential candidate, but his glibness and humor did not go unnoticed.

The former Arkansas governor has signed a one-year deal as a political commentator for Fox News, where he will sound off on a variety of programs. A knowledgeable source says an announcement is expected soon.

Other cable channels had been pursuing Huckabee, who provided commentary on MSNBC during one of its primary-night broadcasts. Fox has given a platform to such former Republican politicos as Newt Gingrich and Karl Rove.

Huckabee honed his broadcasting skills during his years as a Baptist minister, and his underfunded White House campaign relied heavily on TV appearances, from his constant calls to MSNBC's "Morning Joe" to his stint playing air hockey with Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert. His first job, at 14, was reading the news and weather at a radio station.

The deal keeps Huckabee in the spotlight as he contemplates a second run in 2012, a tactic perfected by Pat Buchanan, who hosted CNN's "Crossfire" between presidential campaigns.

No word on whether the deal calls for Huckabee's band to play while Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity kick off their programs.

Brian's Blog Exposes Foster and He Finally Does The Right Thing, Two Years Late

Well, within 12 hours of our post last evening Foster Arnett found his way to Maynardville, Tn to clear his delinquent property tax status in Union County, TN. Our founder and President Brian Hornback entertained questions from News-Sentinel reporters Scott Barker and Hayes Hickman early this afternoon. Check out the News Sentinel's report from Thursday, here.

Foster used the 'ole I moved and forgot to change my address excuse. Did he forget that he owned property in Union County? Not likely! Did he think that Union County didn't need the money to protect his property? Not likely! Did he forget that the children in Union County needed textbooks? Not likely!

If and when he is Clerk, will he allow you or I say we moved and forgot to inform you of my address change? His primary job is to collect fees and he can't pay them himself. Also remember, he says that he is running for all the right reasons and that he believes in doing the right thing. His actions obviously haven't met his words.

Brian's Blog is happy that we helped Foster do the right thing for the good citizens of Union County.

Ryan Haynes - A NEW Independent Republican, Just What We Need

Ryan Haynes, candidate for State Representative at the Concord-Farragut Republican Club stated he is a Conservative first. That is exactly the kind of New Independent Republicans we need to elect in August and November 2008.

“I want to be the first to tell you right here, right now, I’m not running as a Republican, I’m running as a conservative,” Haynes said. “I think my energy and my enthusiasm will serve us well in the legislature,” Haynes added.

Check out the Farragut Press coverage of Mr. Haynes appearance at the Concord-Farragut Club, here.

Farragut and Bearden In The Same District? The Battle of West Knoxville Just Heated Up

I don't know that the battle of West Knoxville could get any hotter. But, thanks to TSSAA it just might happen. In this news story, found in today's News-Sentinel it appears that a re-shuffling of area schools will put the following schools in Class AAA, District 4, Farragut, Bearden, William Blount, Heritage, Hardin Valley, Maryville, West, Lenoir City and South-Doyle. In the past the regular season game between Farragut and Bearden did not mean anything as far as standing in the district. Thus a loss to Farragut in August or September , didn't hurt Bearden in advancing to state in October/November. However, they would and did met in the first rounds of state because they were in different districts. Now the regular season game will mean allot more.

It appears that any decision TSSAA makes will not take effect until 2009.

Foster Arnett, Knox County Clerk Candidate Does Not Pay His Taxes

Because of a tip Brian's Blog began an investigation into the alleged delinquent property taxes of County Clerk candidate Foster Arnett. In a phone interview with the Union County, TN Trustee's office it was revealed that he indeed is a delinquent property tax owner in Union County. Union County is the adjoining county of Knox County to it's north. The property is located at 160 Lakeshore Drive in Maynardville, Union County, TN.

The $362.00 in unpaid taxes for 2006 are filed and in the possession of the office of the Union County Clerk and Master. The $550.14 in unpaid taxes for 2007 (through June) are filed and in possession of the Union County Trustee's office.

Foster's campaign website uses campaign rhetoric like

Do the right thing
Do your very best each day
Treat others as you want to be treated.

His campaign website goes on to proclaim that Foster believes in

Honor Above All Else
Honesty
Integrity
Accountability
Accessibility
and Transparency.

He promises not to violate our trust.

How about the trust of his neighbors in Union County? How honorable, honest, accountable and transparent is his actions in Union County? How is it doing the right thing, when you fail to pay all your property taxes?

The Knoxville News-Sentinel led by Jack McElroy has spent a considerable amount of time and ink on exposing county commission candidate Richard Cate and Sam McKenzie for not paying their taxes. But not a peep or a smudge of ink on their primary endorsed candidate for County Clerk, Foster Arnett.

McElroy and crowd will tabloid (today, on their website and in tomorrow's print edition) on the unfortunate private domestic events (last night) of the other County Clerk candidate. But will they treat Arnett the same? It is doubtful.

Here is a photo of the neighborhood of Foster's waterfront view property. Will McElroy and crowd print a map with directions to this weekend property, like they did with former Sheriff Tim Hutchison's weekend residence? It is doubtful.

Where are the investigative reporters at Scripps on their anointed candidates?

We attempted to reach Foster on the phone number published on his campaign website, there was no answer. A message was left.

Knox County Schools May Implement Staggered School Start Times

Fourth District School Board Member Dan Murphy in public meetings has requested that the school district examine possible staggered start times for schools during the 2008-2009 school year. Knox County Schools in an effort to balance the proposed budget and to comply with Dr. Murphy's request is presenting to the board members a "possible" staggered start schedule for the board's consideration.

The savings in implementing this staggered start schedule will be $640,000.00

Here is the schedule that board members will consider, this decision will be the boards decision, not the Superintendent or his staffs.

Knox County Mayor's Night Out

The Knox County Commission issued the following public notice today. "MAYOR’S NIGHT OUT IS SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 10, 2008 AT 5:00 P.M. AT THE CARTER BRANCH LIBRARY, 9036 ASHEVILLE HIGHWAY. SEVERAL COMMISSIONERS MAY BE IN ATTENDANCE. THE MEDIA IS INVITED." This is a great opportunity to have access to the county department heads and have your voice heard about your community. I suspect that many Carter citizens will voice concern over the need for a NEW Carter Elementary School.

Tomorrow, Tuesday June 10, 2008 9:30 a.m.

all 5 Knox County General Sessions Court Judges will sit together in the old Knox County Courthouse and hear from Public Defender Mark Stephens on his request to not be appointed to further misdemeanor cases. I respect all 5 General Sessions Judges. However, I hope that will take into consideration that money has continually been thrown at the Public Defender's office. With a $2.7 million dollar office space, a bloated office staff along with operational expenses.

This staff could handle 50 misdemeanor cases to a couple of felony murder cases that generate all the media hype. So, remove them from the BIG cases. Better yet let's spend 6-8 months studying if this NEW system is working and going back to court appointed lawyers. What's the rush? Study the results, then determine the best course of action.

Here is the previous post of Brian's Blog on this subject. For the record, I like and support Public Defender Mark Stephens, I love his extended family. On this issue, he and I may have to agree to disagree.

Here is the BEST of Tennessee

This is the BEST the Democrats Can Appoint!

The media and liberals make fun of George W. Bush speak. But they don't recognize the blunders of the anointed Democrat in Bristol, VA last week.

So, is his health plan to treat asthma children with the same treatment as underage alcoholics?

How will he play all his blunders? Leave my speak alone! or I didn't say that before I said this.

Thank you to the State of Georgia. It is crucial that you send Saxby back this year, he is exactly what America needs.

Being Chairman is Hard Work, Good Job Don Daugherty

Don Daugherty has hung it up as Chairman of the Knox County Democrat Party. Don is a good guy, he was responsive and worked hard to bring the factions of the KnoxDems together. There are at least two factions, the one faction is the always been here, yellow dog democrats and the other faction, ain't from around here, deaniacs.

People that have never been County Chairman and would never be selected as County Chairman always sit around writing in their papers, on their blogs and just all around run their mouths like they could or would do it differently. These people have no clue.

It is easier to be a volunteer for a political party or a candidate. It is something entirely different to have your name on the line as the Chairman for the problems of the party and the victories or losses of the party.

I know how Don feels today. In my two years as Republican Party Chairman, I immediately started with a local community newspaper reporting lies about me. I had individuals that were supposed to be on my team calling these "reporters" and spreading lies. I had individuals that were supposed to be on my team calling volunteers and donors and spreading lies. I had the Immediate Past Chairman sending emails to "reporters" and to the leadership of the Tennessee Republican Party. I immediately took inventory and determined who I could trust and froze the rest of them out. Fortunately for me the Executive Committee that I worked with had the same goals that I had. That goal was win every race we could.

It appears that for Don, his executive committee (Board of Governors, in the democrats case) was cutting his legs out from under him. Don has accomplished much in his one year as Chairman.

For me, I first began with a TN Supreme Court decision that called into question the eligibility for nearly every candidate on the 8 year ballot. Every 8 years, nearly every office in the courthouse is on the ballot. Second, we won every race that we were supposed to, taking a sweep of the countywide races. We were then faced with the January 31, 2007 appointment process.

I made a commitment to my family in December 2004 that if I served as Knox County Republican Party Chairman, I would only serve one term (two years). I kept my commitment, in spite of hundreds of phone calls, emails and conversations of people asking me to run again.

I loved the job. For me election day as Party Chairman was like Christmas morning when you were 7 years old. However, I don't miss the "reporters and editors" that print lies and fail to get your response. I don't miss the people that I learned early on would say one thing to your face and call the media and volunteers and spread lies about you. Although, I am better for the ware.

I have contacts in every part of Knox County. Good people that have the same goal that I have and that is to elect good people to office, good Republicans to office. I have become a better and stronger man for each of the skirmish's that I had to experience. Don Daugherty will be a better man for his as well. Don will be back, stronger and better for the experience.

McWherter - The Life and Career of Ned McWherter by: Billy Stair

As I have posted here before, I attend the annual Friends of the Public Library sale every year. I normally attend more than one day during the sale. This year was no exception. On one of the final days, the whole family attended and each one of us got a bag or box of books. One of my books was McWherter The Life and Career of Ned McWherter written by Billy Stair.

It is less than 200 pages and can be read in a three hour setting. In the book it reveals the early history of McWherter. The fact that he was a shoe salesman, selling the shoes by traveling out of the country. How he became a beer distributor, etc.

Many of his legislative accomplishments as Governor, included the creation of TennCare. Donna Shelala the DHS Secretary under President Bill Clinton was instructed by Clinton in a phone conversation to award a waiver in order for Tennessee to create TennCare. McWherter also gave us the appointed School Superintendents, because it would bring up test scores. Test scores have not risen to the level the legislature promised. Also, included in this massive educational reform was funding that has never been approved or adopted. I do not want the funding approved, as it was a proposed income tax. However, that is one arguement that the legislators could make, rescind portions of the BEP program because the funding was never implemented.

I was involved in the 1986 and 1990 Republican campaigns for Governor, where we opposed McWherter. In 1986, I served as the 19th legislative district director for Governor Winfield Dunn's campaign. Governor Dunn served our state as Governor and created the Kindergarten program in the 1970's. He opposed McWherter in 1986. In Knox County, we carried Dunn. In 1990, I supported State Representative Dwight Henry of Cookeville. It was a long shot, but I stood with Henry on principle.

In reading this book it reminded me of actions of the former Republican Congressman from TN's First Congressional District, Jimmy Quillen.

Overall, the book is an interesting read.

Saturday Silly

Today, Hillary Clinton is expected to concede to Barack Obama. I will believe that she concedes when she says the word "concede". However, the Saturday Silly today is from my good friend Walt Wojnar.

There is an organized effort underway for McCain and Obama supporters to visibly show their support for the candidate of their choice. McCain supporters are to drive during the day with their vehicle headlights on and the Obama supporters are to drive at night with their vehicle headlights off.

What a great way for people to visibly support the candidate of their choice.

Republican Ryan Haynes

My next State Representative, Republican Ryan Haynes was on the first row behind Senator John McCain at the town hall meeting that I attended this past Monday. It is important in the primary for primary voters to select and elect a candidate that has been in the trenches of the party grassroots efforts for which the person is seeking the parties nomination. Haynes has been in the trenches with us for the past several years. Remember, I have been active since 1982. Ryan will represent us all effectively, efficiently and professionally.

The shoes of my longtime friend and State Representative Parkey Strader will be hard to fill. However, I am confident that Ryan can handle it.

Trent Tomlinson

I was in Nashville last night, still over on business. Last night began the annual CMA Fan Fest. Since I was in downtown Nashville, I ventured over to the world famous Tootsies Orchid Lounge. In my visits to tootsies, the upstairs bands are more to my liking then the downstairs band.

Last night after having dinner at Merchants, I wandered in to Tootsies and went straight upstairs and guess what current country artist was rocking the upstairs of Tootsies. Trent Tomlinson. I was able to see at least two songs before he exited the stage and left the building. I guess there were about 175 people upstairs during the time that I was there. Had I bothered to check Tootsies website, I would have been there at 6:30 p.m. when he started his performance. After listening to Hailey Hicks of Cedartown, GA. I ventured down to The Second Fiddle and listened to Becki McCloud and band featuring Todd Sansom on keyboard and background vocals. After some time there, I ventured to The Stage and listened to Craig Campbell, Craig's myspace is here and after Craig, up next was Johnny T and Due South. Johnny T and Due South's myspace page is here.

Overall, a great night of music and as I left Nashville this afternoon, the thousands and thousands of country music fans were descending on downtown Nashville for the next four days.

McCain Town Hall Meeting

I was fortunate to be able to attend the John McCain and his Straight Talk Express town hall meeting at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN. Prior to the doors opening the line for the general public went down Fourth Avenue and up Broadway.

I was fortunate to enter through the side door for VIP & Media. The check in was swift and easy with all individuals entering through security screening.

John Rich of the country music duo Big & Rich entertained with about six songs. Rich told the story of when he met John McCain and why he is supporting McCain. Rich introduced Senator Dr. Bill Frist, M.D.. Frist spoke and then introduced Senator Fred Thompson. Thompson spoke and introduced Senator John McCain.

McCain came out and spoke about energy dependency and how to resolve our dependency on foreign fuel. He spoke about the war, the recent comments by the President of Iran and the war on terrorism.

He answered several questions, including one where a lady suggested Fred Thompson as his running mate.

As McCain was leaving, I was able to speak to him and he autographed a copy of the photograph that is utilized as the Brian's Blog profile photo. After it was over, we went outside and I talked with Jim Bryson, a former State Senator and Republican candidate for Governor. We were able to catch up, it was great seeing him.

Senator Fred Thompson was being interviewed on camera. After he finished, I was able to speak to him and have my picture made with him. Bob Davis, Jr., former Tennessee Republican Chairman was there. I was also able to speak to our current Tennessee Republican Chair, Robin Smith. She is the hardest working woman in the state.

Overall, a great event that demonstrates the support that Republicans have across this great state.

I was kind of a troublemaker on the way to the town hall meeting, as I cut through the anti-war demonstrators on Fourth Avenue, I made a comment. They ignored me. I shouldn't have done that, but it was just too tempting.
