Interesting Report From The News Sentinel
Surprising that Jack McElroy didn't tone this down for the school system. Or did he?
Saturday, August 29, 2009
Hey, Jackie What's That On Your Front Page?
Really now little Jack McElroy? Is this really a top of the fold front page headline story? The headline doesn't match the story. The first line of the story says "dealership that once had ties". Jack, you have missed all the other bankruptcies of 2009 (the year of Obama, your parties President) and all the debtors that are listed on the bankruptcies.
This is only news when the person that occupies the Editor's office has an agenda of hated bias for a person or a group of persons. If you're name is Hutchison, Moore, Hornback or a friend of them then little Jack McElroy will take his ink of vile nastiness and throw it at them. But, he refuse to face these individuals face to face with the same vile nastiness.

Interesting Story from this week's News Sentinel
From this past Wednesday's News Sentinel we find this story. Here's a question, Isn't this the same developer that had a townhome development off Middlebrook Pike where a mud spill took out several homes and permantly disabled a doctor?

KCC PTA Education Forum
This morning the Knox County Council PTA held an Education Forum. The topic was Diversity. Dr. McIntyre first addressed those in attendance. His primary focus and the focus of the Strategic Plan is on racial diversity. That the schools administration and workforce will mirror the student racial make-up. So, the same percentage of minorities in Assistant Principal, Principal positions and the same percentage of teachers and staff to mirror the racial make-up of students.
While I would not disagree with that position. Here is the second question that was asked from the audience and by way of disclosure, I asked the question. What about gender diversity among administrators and the workforce, especially in the middle and high schools where young male students need positive male role models? Mellissa Massey of Central Office answered that the school system is currently identifying male faculty members that can be placed in the "principal pipeline". She also indicated that they are working with the Universities to identify the right graduates coming out of the School of Education.
About 20 minutes later, Rebecca Ervin, Principal of Vine Middle said that she wanted to address my question and talked about trying to locate business partners and several organizations that would come in and mentor the students. I did not challenge, Principal Ervin at the time. But she totally missed the point. My question had to do with GENDER DIVERSITY among Faculty of Knox County Schools. Principals, Assistant Principals and Teachers.
Out of 13 middle schools, 10 schools have a female Principal and 3 have a male Principal. Of the total Administrators that includes the 13 Principals, 26 are females and 16 are males.
Of the 13 high schools, 11 are led by a male Principal and 2 are led by a female Principal. Of total Administrators which includes the 13 Principals, 23 are females and 31 are males.
Of the 8 Other Educational Facilities 4 are led by a female Principal and 4 are led by a male Principal. There are 5 male Administrators in the 8 facilities and 4 females.
We will recap the Elementary Schools at a later date.
The Education Forum event was a typical Knox County Council PTA event. The attendees appeared concerned, interested and engaged. When actually it is a social network of stay at home moms that like to be engaged in everybody else's business.
I desire a full open Education Forum, where any and all issues are discussed. I have an interest in the school systems gutting of Career and Technical Education this past year. Also, the 9 elected School Board Members inability to engage in Special Education issues. Also, I would like to see a discussion about the issues raised on this website. The Future of Knox County Schools deserve a real forum.

Is This What We Have To Look Forward To Statewide?
The other Saturday morning, I was driving west on Kingston Pike near Walker Springs Road. I get stopped by City of Knoxville crew painting one stripe. How many City of Knoxville employees does it take to paint one stripe? FIVE. With the Knoxville Mayor as Governor can you imagine how many more employees and the cost for weekend work on our highways and byways. With this type of service department our state and our wallets as taxpayers can't afford Bill Haslam as Governor.
Why Will No One Prosecute Smith?
District Attorney General Randy Nichols, Knox County Sheriff Jimmy "J.J." Jones, Knoxville Police Chief Sterling IV Owens are all conflicted. They do not want to file reports or prosecute an elected official, no matter how sorry the official is. So, if the Ethics Committee finds that Smith has perjured himself, then Nichols can appoint an outside Prosecutor to handle the Smith perjury case.
Sources close to law enforcement inform us that this is not the only case that Mr. Nichols has had to deal with from Commissioner Smith this year.

Steve Hunley Refuses To Appear at Ethics Commitee Meeting
Joe Jarret, Chief Deputy of "troubled" Knox County Law Director Bill Lockett had contacted five witnesses to appear at today's Ethics Committee hearing on the perjury charge of Commissioner Smith.
Local weekly newspaper Publisher and former Knox County School Board Member Steve Hunley through his Attorney informed the Committee that he refused to appear. Appointed Seventh District Commissioner Michele Carringer, Former Commissioner John Mills and Attorney Herb Moncier were NO shows to Jarret's notice.
It was noted that Steve Hunley Crony and Former Black Wednesday Appointed County Commissioner Jack Huddleston was present at the meeting until the committee voted to continue with the hearing. At which point, he left.

Smith's Defense Based on "Troubled" Law Director Bill Lockett's Opinon.
Commissioner Smith's defense on his perjury charges before the Knox County Ethics Committee is based solely on the opinion of Knox County Law Director Bill Lockett. The same Bill Lockett that Smith voted NOT to have sit at and opine on business before County Commission. Evidently, Smith is o.k. with Lockett when Lockett is covering for him. They appear to be two peas in a pod. However, this afternoon Lockett is telling a different tale to individuals than what Smith represented to the committee today. Lockett is set to face the Board of Professional Responsibility in May 2010 due to a contractual breach with his former law firm. Lockett is accused and has in court papers admitted to withholding legal fees from his former law firm and an inappropriate loan from a firm client. There was a move to NOT hear his case. The motion NOT to hear failed 2-5.

Sunshine Law Violation
This morning at 10:20 a.m. a violation of the Sunshine law occurred between Commissioners Smith and Broyles. This meeting occurred during a break in the Knox County Ethics Committee meeting.
Monday night at the Knox County Commission meeting Commissioner Tony Norman and Amy Broyles attempted to end the practice of evidentiary hearings of the Ethics Committee. This morning when the Ethics Committee meeting began, Commissioner Richard Briggs attempted to shut down this hearing before it started. The motion to not conduct the hearing failed 2-5, with Briggs being joined by Chris Etters. Briggs is recusing himself from this hearing.
Here is the photographic evidence of the Sunshine law violation.

Knox County Memorializes Parkey Strader
Last week, My friend and Former Knox County Property Assessor and State Representative Parkey Strader passed away. The funeral service was held on Friday and the interment was Saturday. At 3:30 p.m. today, Knox County memorialized Park M. "Parkey" Strader by naming the walking trail loop off Northshore Drive at Concord Park the "Parkey Strader Loop". The walking trail is very popular and is 2/10 of a mile in length. A crowd numbering more than 125 primarily all family and friends of Parkey were in attendance.
Here are photographs from today's ceremony.

Commissioner Hammond Joins Commissioner Smith as Liars In Common
Fifth District County Commissioner Mike Hammond has officially joined his counterpart Commissioner Smith as Liars In Common. Hammond is planning to run for election as County Commissioner at Large. While he has physically gotten larger while serving as a County Commissioner. That is not what Commissioner at Large is. He will have to run for election countywide. How a guy like Hammond will play in Tuckahoe, Gap Creek, Ft. Sumter and Heiskell is yet to be determined.
Here is the deal, Hammond has sent a fundraising letter to developers, Attorneys and well connected people that have business before County Commission and is seeking campaign contributions from them of no less than $100 and up to the maximum contribution of $1,000.
In this letter, you need to go no further than the first 12 words to see the liar connection. The letter states "When I was elected to serve on County Commission in 2006." 2006? Hammond was first elected in 2004. He won a close election, barely defeating John Schoonmaker to fulfill the remaining portion of Mike Arms term. Hammond desires for the public to ignore this fact. That is why he is lying and shielding the facts from the public. Why? Because the Charter that governs Knox County clearly makes him ineligible to be a candidate for a third term. Here is what the Charter states. The bold type is the most critical and is in bold type for emphasis.
This Section of our Charter was approved by an overwhelming margin, more than 75% of the voters approved it in 1994. Current Circuit Court Judge Dale Workman was Knox County Law Director when the Home Rule Charter was written and approved by the voters. So, he can be considered an expert in the definition of this law. Our sources indicate that he has opined that any portion of two terms is the legislative intent.
So, Hammond appears to be a liar and a professional politician, doing whatever it takes to remain in power.
Sec. 9.17. Term limits.
A. Effective January 1, 1995, no person shall be eligible to serve in any elected office of Knox County if during the previous two terms of that office the person in question has served more than a single term. Service prior to the passage of this measure shall not count in determining length of service. Judges are exempt from this provision.
B. In January prior to each state legislative session until such a time that it can be certified that the legislative term limits described in this clause have been enacted, the clerk shall write all state legislators whose districts include any part of Knox County stating that the people of Knox County desire an opportunity to vote on legislative term limits. The people of Knox County respectfully request that a proposed constitutional amendment limit each Representative to six years (three terms) in the Tennessee House of Representatives and eight years (two terms) in the Tennessee Senate. The people of Knox County also instruct all state legislators representing any part of Knox County to pass this proposed constitutional amendment and place it on the general election ballot.
C. In January of each year until such a time that it can be certified that the term limits described in this clause have been enacted, the clerk of Knox County shall write all U.S. Representatives whose districts include any part of Knox County's limits and both federal Senators stating that the people of this municipality support term limits for the U.S. Congress. The people of Knox County respectfully request that a proposed federal constitutional amendment limit each Representative to six years (three terms) in the United States House of Representatives and twelve years (two terms) in the United States Senate. The people of this municipality also instruct their federal delegation to pass a constitutional amendment imposing these limits and submit it to the states for ratification.
D. If any provision of this petition shall be held unconstitutional, invalid or inapplicable to any persons or circumstances, then it is intended and declared by the people of the County that all other provisions of this petition and their application to all other persons and circumstances shall be severable and shall not be affected by such decision.

Will Jack McElroy, Bruce Hartmann buy into this cover up? Unconfirmed reports are that a group is being formed to "educate" the public about Mr. Hammond. It is reported that the group is likely to be named after a country music song, "Paint Me A Birmingham"

We NEED A Republican County Commission Chairman
At Brian's Blog we like Tank Strickland. He is a good guy, we prayed for him during his time of illness and we are grateful that he is well today. But, Tank is a Democrat.
Knox County is overwhelmingly Republican. The voters speak every election cycle and a vast majority of citizens cast their ballots believing that Knox county is governed best when governed by Republicans.
Now the following Republican Commissioners having served two consecutive terms as Commissioner and have a responsibility to cast a vote for a Republican as Chairman.
Commissioner Ivan Harmon
Commissioner Craig Leuthold
Commissioner Mike Hammond
Commissioner Paul Pinkston
The following Republican Commissioners are expected to run for Commission next year and have a responsibility to cast a vote for a Republican as Chairman.

Commissioner Larry Smith

Commissioner Dave Wright
Commissioner Dave Wright
Commissioner Bud Armstrong
Commissioner Mike Brown
That is 14 votes for a Republican Commission Chairman. Our view is that the consensus candidate for Commission Chairman is Commissioner Craig Leuthold.
If these 14 individuals are going to rely on the Republican Party during the election period then they should support the party in selecting the Commission Chairman. If they do not support a Republican for Commission Chairman then they should resign immediately from Commission and then run for election to Commission as a Democrat or as an Independent.
Should any Republican Commissioner NOT support a Republican then they SHOULD NOT be surprised at the next election cycle that the party runs someone else against them and at the NEXT Countywide Republican gathering that a resolution is passed to give any non compliant Republican Commissioner the BOOT.
The 5 Democrats that are left to vote for a Democrat Commission Chairman are. Commissioner Thomas "Tank" Strickland, Commissioner Sam McKenzie, Commissioner Mark Harmon, Commissioner Amy Broyles and Commissioner Finbarr Saunders.

Wamp Puts His Money Where His Mouth Is...Haslam Keeps His Money In His Own Pocket
Last night was the TN Republican Caucus meeting. A meeting of Republican Legislative members in Tennessee. The Knoxville Mayor got up and spoke about his commitment to the Republican Caucus and sat down. Congressman Zach Wamp got up and spoke about his commitment to the Republican Caucus. He then pulled out and gave a $10,000.00 contribution. So, Wamp puts his money where his mouth is. While the heir to a gas price gouging gas retailer keeps his money in his pocket, how many millions is necessary for one candidate for Governor to compete in the Republican primary?

Come On, Jack. The SEC Learned It From YOU!
Here is the column of Jack McElroy that appeared in the product from the Big Metal Shed on the Hill. McElroy is whining about the SEC (South Eastern Conference) edging out "independent media". McElroy also whines about his own failure to pay a decent living salary to an employee, while UT hired the reporter away.
Now what just a minute, little man. What UT and the SEC has done they learned from you. You spent the money that you were supposed to be paying to the city and county as Payment In Lieu Of Taxes on purchasing the two "independent" weekly products (Shopper News and Metro Pulse) that were kicking your butt. Now they have been marginalized by your influence.
So, you eliminated a percentage of independent media. In addition, you continually hire "independent" writers and bloggers so that you are not responsible for benefits and can have a wall of separation.
So, Come on Jack, the SEC Learned It From YOU!

There Was a Traitor Amongst Us Last Night..
Last night at Bill Clabo Field the Farragut Admirals beat the Indians of Kingsport Dobyns Bennett, 26-8. Brian Hornback of Brian's Blog was present and at halftime received a text from a source near the pass gate that indicated that a Knox County School Board member and their companion came through the pass gate using their Knox County pass. The source said the board member was wearing colors of Dobyns Bennett.
The Knox County School Board member was then observed to walk to the Dobyns Bennett sideline and observe the remainder of the halftime from the western 40 yard line on the Dobyns Bennett side. As the game resumed in the second half, the board member moved to the eastern 20 yard line and observed the remainder of the game.
Which Knox County School Board member was the traitor amongst us last night? Karen Carson.
Our source near the pass gate indicates that Farragut High School Principal Mike Reynolds was alerted and he seemed perturbed as he looked across the field at the 40 yard line.

R.I.P. My Friend Parkey Strader
This morning, I received a text message that my friend Park M. "Parkey" Strader had died around 7:00 a.m. this morning. I became active in Knox County Republican Party politics in 1982. Parkey was one of the first people that I met. I volunteered to work for him in his next election at the Sunnyview precinct. I put out yard signs and on election day, I wore a sun visor and handed out matches, emery boards and the like.
I worked with and for Parkey in every election while he was the Property Assessor. Parkey did not stand for election in 2000 and I thought he had retired. I remember getting the phone call from Parkey in 2004 that he would run as a candidate for State Representative in our district. This was an exciting election win in the Republican primary. The hate that came from his primary and general election opponents made it difficult because Parkey refused to respond to hate with hate.
Several things that I learned from Parkey early on, when running as an incumbent do not use the term re-elect. Because you are running and asking for their vote. So, he used Vote for and Elect, he said it gives an action for the candidates request.
Parkey was never critical of anyone at anytime. Although I and others felt that certain individuals were deserving of criticism, he NEVER would do it. During his illness he served in the legislature and while he could have been angry about it he never complained. All the times that I would call him and ask how he was, he never said he was hurting and never complained of his illness.
Parkey Strader is a man that I am pleased to have called my friend, my Property Assessor and my Legislator. Parkey Strader was a man of actions that I have never been able to copy. He was always positive, never negative. Parkey Strader was that rare exception that comes along once in a lifetime. I am pleased to have spent as much time with him as I did. While his family and all of us friends are left here sad that Parkey is not with us anymore.
This morning, when I got the word, I believe that I caught a glimpse today of what I believe happened in Heaven this morning around 7:00 a.m. this morning. He went through those pearly gates today, with a smile on his face, his hand stuck out shaking the hands of all the saints that went on before him that were waiting to greet him. After he had some time inside the gates of Heaven, he realized that his body doesn't hurt anymore, that he has his new body. He glances back toward the gate thinking about us but he knows that we will be o.k. So, he turns and did exactly what Pastor Adrian Rogers once said he would do when that time comes. “when my time comes, don’t be sorry for me; I’ll be kicking up gold dust on the streets of glory.”
So, Pray for Parkey's family and friends over the next several weeks and months.

The Confession by James McGreevey
I was at McKay's one day and ran across the book of Dina Matos McGreevey and the book of Jim McGreevey. I purchased both. I read Dina Matos McGreevey first and posted about it here in mid July. It took me alot longer than normal to read Jim McGreevey's book.
You remember Jim McGreevey was the Democrat Governor of New Jersey that resigned because he had an extra marital affair with a male employee. He resigned from the Governorship primarily because of a pending extortion.
His book is a slow read. It details everything from his childhood, his raising, his rise to political power. He served as Mayor of Woodbridge and a member of the State Senate. He ran for Governor and lost and four years later ran and was swept into the Office of Governor by a large margin.
There are major differences in his tale and Dina's story of the coming out and of their life together. But, I wasn't surprised at that. I have been under the weather this weekend and so I finished the book so that I could move on to a book that I could enjoy.

Bill Haslam - It's Above His Pay Grade
This report in the Saturday Knoxville News Sentinel exposes one of the weakness of the Knoxville Mayor. The Mayor appoints Joe Walsh as the Head of Parks and Recreation. The Knoxville Police Department conducts a background check, but City of Knoxville tax payer money is still spent on an organization that has a person on as Coach with a charged drug background, granted he has not been convicted but being charged keeps you off until you're proven innocent.
So, if the Knoxville Mayor can not hire the right people to monitor a city organization. How will he be able to hire the right people to monitor the entire state. With Bill Haslam, it's obviously above his pay grade.

MUST SEE TV - September 12, 2009 on CBS
This is MUST SEE TV. I wouldn't have missed it anyway, this will just make it sweeter. Could you have imagined Johnny Majors being the commentator / analyst on Fulmer's first BIG game after he was let go?

Democrat Weiner Calm Now, Angry Weeks Ago
This is from last night's Weiner meeting. He was trying to be Mr. In Control and Calm.
But three weeks ago, he was acting angry, screaming and hollering in his environment.

Stark Comparison
One price gouging gas retailer candidate for Governor's delivery truck or the RV message machine of the candidate for Governor that is one of us.
Wamp wasn't raised behind locked security gates, both were educated in private schools, The difference is that the price gouging gas retailer candidate was able to stop at the family business and get his choice of after school snack. LOL. Wamp has struggled with real jobs to bring home enough money to pay the bills and provide a living for his family. Wamp is one of us and as Governor he will lead as one of us.
*Yes, we edited the original post due to Logan Brummitt's comment that identifies that Wamp was educated at a private school. We did produce a clever distinction, however. Remember, people we need to have a little fun 12 months out. Don't you "good to go" fanatics get so serious. I wasn't referring to Brummitt. It's those other price gouging gas retailer zealots.

Knoxville City Council - Second District
This is the district that four years ago, 48.5% of the citizens desired to have Ken Knight as their Council Representative. However, the incumbent received the rest of the votes. The incumbent is term limited and ineligible to run for a third term.
So, Ken Knight should be the front runner. Knight is the General Manager of Knoxville’s Crown Plaza located in Downtown Knoxville on Summit Hill Drive. Since that election loss, Knight has busied himself with being a second city councilman, although an unpaid one. Knight has attended more than 600 community meetings during the past four years. Knight is ready willing and able to serve on day one. Knight's website is located, here. Knight is on Facebook, here. Knight is also on twitter located, here. Knight's photograph is to the right.
Knight has two challengers. One is Knoxville Architect Duane Grieve. He entered the race just prior to the filing deadline. He was recruited and encouraged to run by the term limited incumbent. No photograph of Grieve's was located. Tierny Bates, another challenger to Knight. Bates is a newcomer to Knoxville having moved here about four years ago. Bates works as a fundraiser for the University of Tennessee. Bates is pictured below.
Conventional wisdom has a Knight -vs.- Grieve contest in November for the City of Knoxville General Election. A Knight -vs.- Bates race would be interesting. However, Brian’s Blog believes that Ken Knight will serve the citizens of District Two well.

Knoxville City Council - Sixth District
This is the seat formerly held by Mark Brown. Brown was recently appointed as a Judicial Commissioner for Knox County. It was necessary for him to step down. Council chose Bob Booker as a seat holder. Booker is NOT running.
There are three candidates so one will drop off before the General election. The candidates are David Dupree, Daniel Brown and Charles Frazier. David Dupree is an Attorney. He has relocated to Knoxville by way of Washington, D.C. He appears to be knowledge and would be a good council member. Daniel Brown is a native Knoxvillian. Brown is retired by the United States Postal Service. He has the time and energy to serve the citizens as a Council member. Frazier a former candidate for public office several times in the past is again making a run for public office. Frazier owns a check advance business. Frazier recently on a forum on WBIR’s Inside Tennessee said that he believes that the answer to the economy of the sixth district is to have Wal Mart or Kroger to locate in the five points area to replace the Walter P. Taylor Homes. Walter P. Taylor Homes are slated to be torn down. His rational is to locate a company that can lose money for two or three years. This demonstrated to us that Frazier is out of touch with business plans and business. Wal Mart or Kroger are NOT in business to lose money. This is the primary reason that Brown and Dupree should be the two candidates that advance to the General election.

The End of a Knoxville Era
Today's Shopper News has my buddy, my pal Jake Mabe's column. The "Mabester" as he is affectionately referred to by close friends and at least enemy has a column about his favorite singer, Blount Counties own Robinella. Brian Hornback of Brian's Blog is known to have at least two of Robinella's CD's on his ipod. Primarily because his buddy and his pal wouldn't stop talking about her. Hornback listens to Robinella regularly. However, Hornback has NEVER seen Robinella in person. All that will change over the next three weeks. Read the Mabester's column below or click on this link to go directly to the Managing Editor's page of the Shopper News. As the Mabester says "it's just the beginning".
She’s just begun to fly
Let’s get one thing straight right out of the box – this isn’t an ending, only a beginning.
Robinella, Blount County’s sweetheart, my friend, my favorite singer, is ending her longtime weekly Sunday night show at Barley’s. The Old City eatery has decided to go in a different direction.
I think it’s the worst decision since Ford introduced the Edsel. Trust me, they won’t again get my business.
But, for a singer of Robin’s talent, this is an opportunity to move on to better things.
Will never forget the first time I heard that voice. Went by chance one cold winter’s night. I perked up during the opening song, a Crystal Gayle classic.
By the time she sang “Teardrops,” the one that became my favorite, I was hooked. Sunday nights at Barley’s became a weekly routine.
Hearing her sweet sad songs paints life in shades of vivid Technicolor. And, for a couple of blissful hours, this crazy roller coaster ride we call life makes perfect sense.
Well, you know what they say about all good things …
So many good memories, though. Concert trips to Michigan and Chattanooga, “Teardrops” and sad songs, “Amanda,” Taylor and Mike, clapping too loud, Cash in his cowboy hat. Will never forget it.
Robin would appreciate this:
Since I’ve heard the news, I’ve tried to take it like a stoic cowboy, holding it all inward, lord knows I’ve tried.
But, like that old Don Williams song says, it is an awful awakening in a country boy’s life. It’s a reminder that the Earth keeps turning even when we want it to stop awhile.
Her music will continue, though. She is working on a new record. If the reaction of the audience at last month’s Tennessee Shines is any indication, the crowd will always love her. She is a local favorite with good reason.
But mark this down. This boneheaded Barley’s decision is a good thing. Robin is talented enough to sing at the Ryman or Radio City Music Hall or the Riverbend Music Center. No, it isn’t the end, my friend.
This Robin has just begun to fly.
Let’s pack the house
Robinella continues her Sunday night engagement at Barley’s Taproom and Pizzeria (Jackson Ave. in the Old City) through Aug. 30. Come on out and pack the house. The show starts at 8 p.m.; cover charge is $5.

Knoxville City Council - First and Fourth District
There are only two candidates running for First District City Council position. They are native Knoxvillian and former City Councilman Nick Pavlis. Pavlis has NOT been on Council for six years. Pavlis works for Charter Communications. Pavlis has a website, it is located here. Nick is pictured with his wife to the right.
The other candidate is Robert Marlino, he works with a downtown Knoxville Architectural firm. Both candidates will advance to the General election.
There are also only two candidates running for Fourth District City Council position. They are longtime community activist Nick Della Volpe. Brian Hornback of Brian's Blog worked with Della Volpe in the late 80's and early 90's when as a community we fought the construction of a mass burn incinerator. Della Volpe has been instrumental in the continued success of Town Hall East. In the late 80's and early 90's Brian Hornback of Brian's Blog was a member and an ordained Deacon and Elder of Eastminister Presbyterian Church. During that time and today, Della Volpe is a member of Eastminister. Della Volpe has a campaign website it is located, here.
Former failed City Council At Large candidate Ray Abbas is a candidate. He has recently been hospitalized with migraine headaches. Abbas has a campaign website it is located, here. Both Della Volpe and Abbas will advance to the General election ballot in November.

Knoxville City Council - Third District
Inside Tennessee, the WBIR talking head show featured the four candidates for City Council, Third District. The candidates faced the normal panel of talking heads. Not intelligent heads, just talking heads. Interestingly, two of the four panelists are not even City of Knoxville voters. Susan Richardson Williams votes in Knox County at the A.L. Lotts precinct. Dennis Francis votes in Knox County at the Concord precinct. Brian's Blog has not yet confirmed the residency voting location of Jack McElroy and John Becker.
The candidates for Knoxville City Council Third District are Joel Bond, Brenda Palmer, Gerry Holman and Joshua Nelson.
Joel Bond is a local businessman and appears to have conducted some homework about the district he hopes to serve. He is a Knoxville native and is a father of three young children. He would make an excellent City Council member. Joel's photograph is located to the right. Joel's grassroots campaign has a Facebook page located, here. Joel also is a twitter and his twitter page is located, here.
Brenda Palmer brags of her involvement in the Hillary Clinton for President campaign. Enough said. No photograph was found of Palmer.
Gerry Holman is a former marketing guy. His expressed views appear to be conservative. He made the decision to enter the race within 24 hours of the deadline to qualify. His photo is below. His website is located here.
Joshua Nelson a young Realtor appears to be a good young man and capable of the job as City Councilman. No photograph was located of Nelson. The candidates for Knoxville City Council Third District are Joel Bond, Brenda Palmer, Gerry Holman and Joshua Nelson.

In the September 22 primary the top two candidates advance citywide. After the primary, we will endorse one candidate. But at this time the third district would be best served to select in the Primary, Joel Bond and either Gerry Holman or Joshua Nelson.

Knox Democrats Gather and Only Talk About Collecting More Taxes
Here is the report in today's print edition of the Big Metal Shed on the Hill detailing last nights Truman Day Dinner. The annual fundraising gathering of Knox County Democrats. Three of the four expected Democrat candidates for Governor were present.
All they could talk about is whether to repeal our sales tax holiday weekends and support for a State Income Tax. In this economy that's the party of tax and spend.
Democrat Senator Jim Kyle of Shelby County an expected candidate for Governor was a no show, raising the expectation that he is all talk and no action.
By the way, Democrat Governor Phil Bredesen has already canceled our Spring No Tax Holiday Weekend. Democrat = Tax and Spend.

Metro Pulse Never Ceases To Please Brian's Blog
This weeks Ear to the Ground. Our response is to quote two great Americans. One that has passed on and the other a fictional character.
First, Knoxville's first colorful politician and grocer Cas Walker. "It doesn't matter what they write about you as long as they spell your name right." The Metro Pulse didn't disappoint. In the spirit of that great fictional Boston Attorney Denny Crane. "Brian Hornback, Brian Hornback, Brian Hornback."
The second quote from that Great fictional Mother of all Mothers, Madea. "It don't matter what people call you. It only matters what you answer to."
So, with that we thank the Metro Pulse for never ceasing to please us by spelling the name right.

Brian's Blog Reported This on Tuesday...Before Everyone Else
We reported this on Tuesday. An hour after we went on line with our post, the local liberal blog tried to drum up support, here. A commenter even posting that our crystal ball was wrong. Hayes Hickman reported this morning that support was slipping, here. This evening at 5:13 p.m. Hayes Hickman reports what we said would happen on Tuesday, here.
So, the team work of Greg Mackay and Scott Frith didn't pan out on this one. And the taxpayers are shelling out over $195,000.00 for this duo, a duo that can't even pass their "dream".

Republican Andrew Graybeal for Commission - You Read it at Brian's Blog First.
Here is today's "official" announcement of Republican Andrew Graybeal that he will be a candidate for Knox County Commission, Seventh District.
August 5, 2009
It is with great pleasure that I give notice to the residents of the seventh district my intentions to seek the election of County Commissioner of the seventh district. A seat in which now is held by Commissioners R. Larry Smith and appointed Commissioner Michelle Carringer. After careful review and research I feel as if the citizens of the seventh district deserve a representative whom is not a politician, rather someone whom will be a servant for the people. I have always stood for conservative measures and feel that a public official should perform research prior to any vote for the best interest of the citizens in which he or she would represent. My position was given clearly at the Halls Republican Club which political ticket in which I will be running upon, and needs no further explanation. I will pledge that I will serve the needs of ALL citizens of Knox County no matter what their political nature may be. I am ready to serve the citizens prior to the election and will be eager to serve when elected.
Education: With the greatest portion of our tax dollars being spent to on education, as your commissioner I would focus on the results of educational spending. Properly educated students brings forth unlimited opportunities, which will create future generation growth for Knox County.
Development: I have personally watched our district flourish from the rural, agricultural, small business environment to major commercial and residential community. I would envision future development for the seventh district, landowners should have the right to sell for future development, however, future development shall not harm the community and adjacent landowners.
Government Waste: Funding decisions from Knox County Commission should be conservative with no risky decisions with tax payers’ money. Our local weak economy should be carefully monitored, and as your commissioner, I would certainly research prior to making costly decisions which affect the citizens of Knox County. The best interests of the citizens of Knox County shall be my first priority.
Commissioner Accountability: As a commissioner for Knox County, I will be accessible to the citizens at all times. Refraining from scandalous and deceptive business ethnics. I am assertive to pledge to be a servant for to the citizens of Knox County and thru my efforts and knowledge I wish to give my time and services to the community in which I would proudly serve.
My Personal Pledge to Knox County:
Our County Commission is not the place for politicians or protégés. Our Citizens deserve properly trained leaders, someone with leadership experience, someone whom possesses a high standard of ethics, and a personal history to match, I have these qualities which is why I want to be the County Commissioner for the seventh district of Knox County.
REAL REPRESENTATION for all of Knox County
Get Real with Graybeal
Will you vote for me as the PEOPLES commissioner?

Einstein once said, 'The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
'It is the poor who habitually elect Democrats---yet they are still POOR
"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves."Abraham Lincoln

Where O Where Is The Bistro Buzz?
Here is tomorrow's Farragut Shopper. There is NO Bistro Buzz. Where O Where is it? The last one featured School Boarder Karen Carson and her husband. They no showed the week they were advertised and then appeared the next week. Is it possible that the Carson's closed the Buzz? If it is than that would be a closing in Farragut during the reign of Mayor McGill. Do we now keep track of all closings under Mayor Ralph McGill?
Mackay Admits to Fraudulent Use of County Resources
Here is Jack McElroy and Crew's attempt to explain away the fraud of hiring Scott Frith by Greg Mackay. It is assumed that McElroy and crew are covering for Scott Frith because he is a former employee of Shopper News, an E.W. Scripps owned entity.
The article stated that "Mackay said he posted the job for five days with the Human Resources Department even though he was not required to do so." So, Greg Mackay admits to the pre meditated fraudulent use of the Knox County's Human Resources Department. Because he said the hiring of Scott Frith was because "It had a lot to do with him being the runner-up," Mackay said. "He got two votes from the commission to be the administrator...."
In a comment from an earlier Brian's Blog post job applicant Arby Dickert stated "I found out about the position by visiting Karns library. I happened to look on the bulletin board in the entranceway and there were a list of job notices. This one caught my eye. Because I am looking for a position, I figured that I would apply. The requirements did not seem to be difficult.
Needless to say, I heard nothing about the position until I saw it was in the newspaper. There were no e-mails, phone calls or interviews.
Was I surprised? Not really."
Brian's Blog has been unable to contact the job applicants because state law requires Social Security number, address and phone numbers be redacted from the copies that we received from the Human Resources Department.
It is believed that this job is an arranged quid pro quo.
Sources close to Mackay and Frith have informed us that the reason that the salary was set at $83, 711 is that if the Republicans maintain the legislative majority and when Paul Crilly is replaced as an Election Commissioner. It is believed and agreed that Scott Frith will be appointed as Administrator of Elections and he will name Greg Mackay as Deputy Director Administrator of Elections. The sources have informed us that he (Mackay) had determined that he could live on a reduced salary of $83,711.
Changes they are a Comin'
It is expected that when the legislature convenes in January 2010 legislation will be introduced to allow home rule form of governments with term limit provisions to also term limit the position of Administrator of Elections.
